Any towing comparsons for 5.7L to diesel?

Some of you may have had a 5.7 and traded it for a diesel. How would you compare the towing power of the two engines? Granted, the diesel will get better fuel economy. But will the hemi feel just about as strong as the diesel when towing up a long 5%-6% grade? I'm thinking that the hemi would only need to run about 1000 rpm faster to maintain 55-60 mph; what do you think?

Well, according to these journalists, the Diesel Jeep is not the last word in towing. See where the V8 slots in, performance wise, between the other cars, and it might give you an idea. All cars towed the same 5,740 lbs Tige 22Ve boat and trailer.

Maybe it's just me, but who cares about 0-60 times when towing? I would want to know I have adequate power throughout the range and control.

I never want to 'floor it,' like they do in these tests. I just want to maintain a decent speed at no more than 4000 rpm while climbing over the mountain passes. (Towing a 3000 lb travel trailer, 7' wide x 16' long x 8.3' high, in case anyone is curious.) That's why I was hoping for some real world experiences.

Yup and fuel economy while towing. A zero to sixty test is the last test i would think of doing, in fact I've been towing various trailers with various tow rigs for 15 years and I have never thought go myself "i better do a zero to sixty test now".

Ignoring that ridiculous 0 to 60 comparison, let's go back to the original question.

I went from a 5.3L V8 6-speed Silverado to the diesel Grand Cherokee. Fuel economy improved from 16 mpg to 23 mpg pulling my 3,000 lb trailer. The diesel can hold higher gears and I rarely notice it down shift.

The 5.7L hemi needs to run about 500 RPM faster to get the same horsepower as the diesel in the normal driving range (see chart below). The diesel has 33% more horsepower than the 5.7L V8 at 2,000 RPM which is the heart of the normal driving range.
