Anybody tow a toy hauler?

Thinking of purchasing a toy hauler and a Polaris Rzr. I know I can get 19' toy hauler in the sub 4000lb range with an additional 1000lbs for the Rzr. I can tow the toy hauler mostly empty of fluids so I'm thinking just another 500 pounds of gear. In the end in hoping to keep the total weight to around 6000 pounds which is around 80% of my total towing capacity. In the Jeep will only be 2 adults and 2 toddlers plus whatever fits in the cargo area.

Will the Jeep be up to the task doing sub 200 mile trips and not passing through any large mountain ranges? Plus some of the trips would be minus the Rzr which would save a 1/6th of the weight.

Re: Anybody tow a toy hauler?

If you have the factory tow package and use a weight distributing hitch, should be no problem. You do need to install a brake controller.

Re: Anybody tow a toy hauler?

It'll pull it, at about 12mpg. As soon as you're in tow haul mode these things get thirsty. We pulled our 18' Aerolite to Jasper last September, it's around 3700-3800lbs depending how loaded it is and the mileage really goes downhill. It's just under 3000lbs dry. There are some good size hills and I kept it at the speed limit because I wanted to see how it performed. It pulls the trailer way better than my lifted JK, just not as much fun when you get there.

Re: Anybody tow a toy hauler?

I know the engine and tranny can pull the load. I'm more worried about the short wheel base and the trailer pulling me around down the freeway. Plus usually toy haulers are a little on the taller side.

I was hoping someone around here has pulled a similar set up to ease my fears.

Re: Anybody tow a toy hauler?

Stability has been excellent on mine with the 18ft open car trailer and 12ft enclosed motorcycle trailer (neither has sway control or load distribution). The short rear wheel to hitch distance I think helps there. You really feel the wind resistance more than the weight when towing, as the jeep has a pretty small frontal area compared to a full size pickup.

Pulling a giant box which sticks up 5 feet up higher than my Jeep is my worry

Get a weight distribution hitch and enjoy your new toys.

Think Outside !- No Box Required.

Re: Anybody tow a toy hauler?

No issue with that weight or size. I pulled a 20 foot box trailer weighing in around 6.5k, with two kayaks, and 2 bikes on the roof of the jeep. Yes you have to go a little slower but it pulled like a champ. I have to say that my Dad's 07 WK diesel pulled that kind of weight a little better then my hemi but I couldn't complain about my WK2.

Re: Anybody tow a toy hauler?

I'd like to see some pics of the trailer hooked and loaded. I'm debating on enclosed car hauler but am afraid it's too much trailer for this little SUV.

I towed my son's TJ on a flatbed. Its modified for off-road and weigh's about 4000 - 4500 lbs. The hemi towed it just fine. It did tug a few times but no real sway. When I tow my 3000+ lb boat I hardly know its back there.

Re: Anybody tow a toy hauler?

Does the QL still lower the truck at highway speed even with a trailer?
