Anyone heading to hatteras island this summer

Im sure anyone who frequents hatteras island is aware that driving your vehicle on the beaches from oregon inlet through ocracoke island now requires an ORV pass. But just in case you aren't, be prepared to pay a 50 dollar fee for a weekly pass and spend 7 minutes watching a video at a licensing facility. I think it's 125 for an annual pass. I know there are a few of us on here who enjoy taking the jeep off road down there so thought I'd post up about my experience.

I was able to acquire an ORV pass and it seems I timed it out perfectly. As I walked in to the licensing facility I was handed a application that took maybe 2 minutes to complete. As I finished up from inside the small single wide trailer a park ranger asked if there was 1 more person ready. The ranger supervising the paperwork part then sent me inside. After an awfull video explaining the rules of beach driving we were then sent to a cashier who stole 50 dollars from me and in exchange, handed over the coveted pass to drive on beaches. I had nightmares of the process taking hours and lines that were miles long. Not the case at all. Aside from having to part with 50 bucks for something that was free last year, the process was quick and painless.

Sid-

ORV permits can be obtained beginning February 15th at any of the three NPS permit offices located at Coquina Beach, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Visitor Center (Buxton), and the Ocracoke Visitor Center. These offices will be open year-round, seven days a week (except Christmas Day), from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with expanded hours on weekends and holidays during the summer season. I think they open at 7 am for holidays. You need to bring a copy of your drivers license and registration. You're also required to carry a shovel, jack and a board to place said jack. Visit http://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisi...ehicle-use.htm for all the stupid bird lover rules. Boo nps and boo Audubon society.

Plenty of options from oceanfront to sound front and everything in between.

A lot of the beach access has been restricted so driving out on the points of oregon inlet or the point in hatteras are now impossible. Still a great place to be!

Man I can't wait to get to OBX in August. This permit is only required for the Hatteras area correct? I plan on doing some beach driving north of corolla when I go.

No pass needed in corolla or corova, which is nice. I think I'm going to switch to north of duck for family vacations going forward due to all the new rules and beach closures on hatteras island.

The other good thing about Corolla or Carova is that it's slightly less of a drive if you are trying to come to the heart of things (kitty hawk, kdh, nags head). I like both spots though minus paying to cruise in hatteras now.
