Re: April, 2014 Consumer Reports - Annual Auto Issue

As a three-time Jeep owner, I am always interested in CR's ratings . . . although not interested enough to make them a factor in choosing a vehicle. Those calling CR biased have missed the point. As mentioned previously, an owner report of a defective radio or cupholder counts as much as a report of a blown engine.

IMO, Jeep has always had miserable fit and finish, but category-dominant drivetrain and running gear. IMO again, that dominance has evaporated in this highly competitve marketplace, leaving Jeep to be judged on the basis of its cupholders, and idiotically short-sighted cost controls.

The messenger-bashing I see here is pathetic, IMO. All of us love Jeeps, some of us want them to improve faster than others. Unfortunately for for the prospect of fast action, most of us are "enthusiasts" who are unlikely to "never buy another Jeep again" on the basis of fit and finish.

My thanks to the OP for posting this, hopefully Jeep will begin to start to commence to take notice--hahahaha.

One thing that I've found interesting is that after tearing down the Cherokee as not ready for prime time, this issue of CR then goes on to cite the Cherokee numerous times in other articles as having features and capabilities that they would like other manufacturers to emulate.

I think it suffers from the same problems as GC. Tranny needs some tweaking. Although it has a controversial look it is quite a contender with RAV4, CRV and KIA crowd.

Re: April, 2014 Consumer Reports - Annual Auto Issue

Guess I am a bit of a contrarian. have had several Vegas and an Astre that were fine as long as they had a/c (bigger radiator). Three Fieros. A bunch of Reattae (still have a coupe and a 'vert), and just picked up a Crossfire. I have always liked cars that were either odd or too expensive and depreciated rapidly. Or nice vehicles from a company that was ahead of its time (the Vixen).

Have had a lot of new and used cars and only ones that stayed stock were ones I bought for my wife. (Crossfire has now had the seat rebuilt and the rear crossmember (not structural) shortened. Also has Bluetooth and hands-free for my phone - WK2 already had and am adding to my '90 'vert.

One thing I have learned about the media: it is always wrong, are few journos who really understand what they are writing about. Some have People Who Know on speed dial but not many.

I look to the media mainly for specifications. That they usually just cut'n'paste and sometimes for humor (auto auctions on TV). But not much else.

Bought my '12 WK2 when new because I felt it was exactly what I wanted and a better tow car than the '92 TranSport it replaced. It is.

This!
My high school car, a '72 Ford got solid black CR circles. I drove it hard from '77 to '85, up to 18k miles, and the engine never burned or leaked oil.

My '12 Jeep has 40k miles on it, not a bit of problem.
