Articulation?

I'm probably going to get blasted by all the loyal Jeep guys on here, but I've been watching some of the off road videos on youtube and while the GC seems to be a beast off-road, I'm failing to see all of this articulation that they are bragging about. To me, lifting a wheel off the ground two feet doesn't qualify as articulation. I have a 2012 Power Wagon, and that truck has some real articulation.

Don't mean to offend anyone, just wondering if anyone else has the same thoughts as me? I still love the GC and can't wait to get mine in, even though it will be a pavement princess...

Re: Articulation?

This has been talked about on here for quite a while. Anything with an independant suspension is going to be limited on wheel articulation. Generally speaking even without a lot of wheel articulation the traction control systems work very well to keep the Jeep moving.

Re: Articulation?

I have no doubts about the GC holding it's own off road. I am actually pretty amazed at what it can do, judging by some of the videos I have seen. I just see very little acutal articulation...

The crevices (or whatever you want to call them) on the pics above, my truck went through with ease and very little, if any, scraping on the skid plates. A Wrangler could easily do this as well, but I don't think I would attempt in the GC.

Re: Articulation?

I agree completely, my only point is that Independant suspensions have been known to have a shortcoming in the articulation department for a while now. I just have never heard anyone (except for a salesperson maybe) say that these have good wheel articulation. A couple of the video reviews, off road specific ones, actually comment on the lack of articulation but still award the GC with high honors off road.

Side note: I've always loved the power wagons, sweet truck.

Re: Articulation?

Yeah, I wouldn't expect a whole lot of articulation from a WK2. Some of those crevices you pictured might swallow a WK2 whole, but I suspect you'd be surprised at some of the stuff you could throw at it. Another thing to keep in mind is that most of the off road videos you see of WK2s are of those with Quadra-Lift. QL's OR2 setting is great for ground clearance, but not so great for articulation. The Normal Ride Height setting (or a steel-sprung WK2) actually gives better articulation; the ground will just meet the skid plates or belly much quicker

The Jeep website really brags about the GC's articulation...

Yea I see how that makes it seem like these all have great articulation, which compared to other fully independant suspended vehicles, it probably does. But there really isnt any comparison to what can be accomplished with solid axles as far as wheel articulation. A llifted wrangler would show the articulation you expect. It's just an inherent limitation of independant suspensions.

Good luck with your JGC

Re: Articulation?

Thanks. It doesn't matter to me though, off-road capabilities isn't why I decided on this vehicle. It will be my wife's daily driver and the family truckster. I chose the Jeep because it's an awesome vehicle and I'm a die-hard Mopar guy. Only other vehicle in the running was the Durango, but my wife doesn't like them so we were down to one choice. There's no way in hell I was going to buy an Exploder or Tahoe and the the imports are way more than I was willing to spend.

Re: Articulation?

The most our JGC's will see as far as wheel articulation is when our wives mount the curb in the mall.
95% of JGC's will never go offroad to the limits that will affect the limited wheel travel.

Re: Articulation?

They need to add cross link valves to the air suspension like LR. That way they could achieve great ride and articulation abilities. I was hoping for this change to be made on the 2014's, but they were only worried about changing the looks and adding an 8 speed tranny.
