I would agree (although they're tight with Nissan today aren't they?). For fun I just looked on wiki and learned that Renault did some good things, eg. the venerable 4l engine.

Starting with the 1987 models, a 4.0 L (244 cu in) I6 engine, derived from the older 258 cu in (4.23 L) I6 with a new head design and an electronic fuel injection system, replaced the outsourced V6. American Motors' "new" engine was designed with help from Renault and incorporated Renault-Bendix (Renix) parts for fuel and ignition management.

After 19+ years on the road, the engine and transmission of my XJ still ran like new...but everything else had pretty much turned to compost.

Re: As of today - 12 New Jeeps - $400,000

All of these are still in the family, a couple as hand me downs:
1979 CJ7 Green I6 quadratrack, routine maintenance includes replacing the front end u-joints every 25,000 miles whether you need them or not and the body every 100,000 miles or 6 years
2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo Gunmetal I6
2009 Liberty Rocky Mtn Deep Water Blue V6
2011 Grand Cherokee Overland Mineral Gray V8
