Audi Q7 vs. GC Overland V8

The Audi Q7 sure looks great. We decided to take a closer look, though we're 99% certain the Overland is the smart pick. Right off the bat:

1) In spite of a spec that shows more legroom, I had less than in the GC! How do they measure? I'm 6'3.
2) While we weren't certain of the exact numbers, we felt that the car felt cramped up front, a sort of stuffed in feeling. For such a BIG SUV it was much more like a car inside, and not in a good way. This was surprising as it seems like a foot longer than the GC!
3) The quality of the leather, dash components and so on were on par with the GC, but the overall execution is more refined. Some of the switchgear felt nicer. The Q7 felt a bit more evolved in this respect. I like the steering wheel better in the Q7, which fit our hands a bit better.
4) Underway we felt that the Q7 had more noise, especially coming from the tires. I mentioned this to the dealer and he agreed the tires were noisy, but that the Q7 is very quiet. Okay.
5) I didn't find the handling much different, certainly not like the X5.
6) The engine is not very strong. Period. From a standstill the Q7 made considerable engine noise to climb a hill. The CG with Hemi, while not a rocket, was far nicer in this regard.
7) The Q7 offers a flip up 3rd row. Even our much smaller Outlander has this feature. The seats are SUPER small, but on rare occasions....a very nice thing to have! This should have been included on the GC as an option. There's certainly room for it. I know two buyers who bought something else because of this omission. Oddly, in spite of the Q7 being MUCH larger than our Outlander, the 3rd row was almost as small!

The dealer was fairly honest with us, agreeing that the Q7 could not match the GC Overland in deep snow or offroad. He said it was focused on luxury family hauling on the road with the ability to handle bad weather better. We really could not find that the Q7 offered any more luxury than the Overland. It's handling was not much different-perhaps a bit less body roll, but the lack of power makes it feel less substantial. This was really a killer as the power certainly felt far from upscale. I think it's in the area of 335 HP. On the highway it's fine, then try to pass. That engine makes a fuss compared to the Hemi.
In the end we felt (my wife and I) that the Q7 was a weak choice, it's most redeeming feature being the 3rd row.

The Q7 we drove was 59K with a MSRP beyond that. They also had a loaded one with 19K on it for 43K off a two year lease. A nicely equipped new one could be bought in the low 50K range, so it's a viable pick from a price perspective against a loaded Overland. Plus, when you're talking cost/value you need to look at the Audi's higher resale.

But even if the Audi makes better financial sense to some, it's lack of power, failure to deliver even modest off road ability and cramped feel just held the whole package back. It's a pretty SUV, but so is the Overland. I'm a little surprised that the LR4 and GC basically "own" this segment.

^Agree with Capt's review. I previously came out of 4 Audi's and a VW Touareg.

Note the new generation Touaregs also lack the offroad prowess of earlier versions, which were previously on par with the JGC. It is also smaller than the JGC, and the TDI can get pricey. The new Treg body style is also fugly IMO.

I really wanted to like the Rovers, but top heavy feeling, reliability concerns, and price premiums put them out for me as well.

I don't know why people suggest a Durango as a replacement for a GC Overland. It is not nearly as capable off road. I'm not part of the 95% of buyers who won't use the GC Off road ability. If that was the case I'd be looking at the X5, Q7 and so on much more seriously.

Correct. But the 3rd row does require a slightly longer wheelbase, which affects offroading.

A simple set of flip up jump seats, like those found in several smaller SUV's would not require a longer wheelbase.

The lack of such seats is not a deal breaker...I just wish it had it!

I think you're right on the mark with the LR4 as the only true comparison, in the US, at least. The European Touareg is still available with air-suspension and lockers, no plans to bring it hear. though.

That said, the JGC, with air suspension and interior refinement has nearly caught up to the 2003 Touareg and 2005 LR3. The Touareg had better luxury features and fit-finish than even the latest Overland Summit.

Price is the main advantage with the JGC. Amazing for the features and it looks fantastic. Best value/performance ratio.

For me:

Q7: Hot, but too large, with the V8 gone, TDI is the way to go, but expensive.
Q5: Handsome, too small, but that 2.0 engine is fantastic.
X5: Decent looking, useless for true off-roading.
X3: Ugly, ugly, ugly.
ML: Fussy, no real off-road chops.
GL: Great space, good looks, just OK off-road, with available air-supsension.
LR4: Handsome, very capable (off-roading is actually effortless), very limited dealer network.

Not being a car designer, I'm sure you are not aware of several compromises needed to fit a third row seat. Please, I don't want my JGC cargo capacity or fuel tank size or rear seat room or wheelbase to be compromised (as well as the extra cost) just to fit a stupid pop up third row seat. If you want/need third row, buy something else, a minivan perhaps. Don't be imposing the compromises for your silly option on me!!! There are so many compromises for useless items on the JGC now, I don’t need another one!

I think Jeep will get arround to addressing your issue with the Grand Wagoneer by offering third row seating and the JGC drive train in the longer wheel base vehicle… special just for you. J

Did you see the U-tube video of an everyday driver getting the L4 stuck during a off road demonstration. It didn't have enough power to get out of a jam. Looked embarrasing to the L4 staff on hand. Didn't seem to be that off road capable to me

How much MT advertising do you think L4 marketing had to purchase in order to get a favorable review?
