Auto A/C Problems and Frustrations

Hello,

Since the cold weather is here in Florida, I have noticed that the auto a/c isn't working like it is supposed to. It always puts the front window defroster on when it doesn't need to be on, making the inside freezing cold while driving and every time I get in the car, I have to manually adjust the air and it is really starting to become annoying. Has anyone else had problems with their auto a/c? Does anyone have a fix for it?

The auto a/c is supposed to adjust the air on the inside of the car depending on the exterior temperature and stuff. I have driven other cars that have auto a/c (Mercedes, Lexus, Lincoln, Maserati) and they do what they are supposed to do which is adjust the inside air so its comfortable for the driver and passenger in all weather conditions.

I agree with you, I have had plenty of cars with auto climate and my 2014 Grand Cherokee has the worst auto climate system ever. I believe most function off of what the actual inside temperature of the vehicle is and what you have it set to be and the 2014 Grand Cherokee works off of what the outside temperature reading is and this number is rarely correct when you first start driving. Some idiot wrote the software for this vehicle's climate control.

Yeah exactly mine keeps putting the windshield defroster on which means no air is blowing out inside the car for the passengers which makes the ride so uncomfortable. The other cars I've driven are much "smarter" and can actually detect if the windshield has frost on it or not. I wonder if I could do a lemon suit on it if it keeps acting up.

Was just at the dealer yesterday and they performed an Hvac software update to my 2014 JGC limited... Not sure if you'r problem was fixed by it but worth a shot...

Re: Auto A/C Problems anf Frustrations

Have you guys had the updates below applied to your jeeps? One corrects the wacky HVAC operation and the other corrects the screwed up external temp sensor which the HVAC uses. I had similar complaints as you and hated the HVAC in this jeep it drove me crazy but after the updates all is well, completely fixed. I put it on 72 Auto last summer and haven't touched it since. Anyway give it a try if you haven't already and if they apply to your date range. Good luck

Thanks I will try those when I bring it in next time and see if those fix the problem. The only thing is that none of them said anything about the window defroster but who knows, maybe the updates will fix it.

It actually fixes the whole wacky HVAC operation not just the couple things it says there. Mine used to blast heat out of the defrost and fry everyone in the cabin then turn off and freeze you for awhile it was a mess, no matter how you set it was never right. Same thing in the summer with the AC but less noticeable bothersome than the cooking in the winter time. Those two flashes really did wonders for it the system now works better than other cars I have had. other cars typically I adjusted the temp a little between summer and winter seasons but this one after the fix its just put it on 72 Auto and forget it. Good luck

Re: Auto A/C Problems and Frustrations

I have noticed that when it is between 50 and 50f it will turn the air on. I wonder if it senses that it is too warm in the car because of sunshine. Anyway you would think it would be smart enough to simply take the colder outside air and not use the AC. I have to go to the climate screen sometimes and take it out of auto just to make sure the defrost or AC isn't on. It's just stupid.

Re: Auto A/C Problems anf Frustrations

I'm in Florida so I haven't had to defrost a windshield in years. Its been in the 60's lately but in the early mornings its been as low as 52. I have to go on the AC screen often to turn off the defroster when I take the air out of auto because when I switch it to manual, it'll show that its on the defroster and the feet (even though I never feel any air hitting my feet when that pops up.

Re: Auto A/C Problems and Frustrations

Also I've noticed that as soon as you start the vehicle, it starts blowing vent air at you immediately, even if it really should wait for some heat ( like when it's 40 deg out....) ?? most other vehicles I've had with not blow ANYTHING until that air is the desired air to get the cabin to temp and then divert it to the proper channels (ie floor or vent..) depending on what is needed in auto.....And I have had the latest HVAC updates.. Drives my wife nuts and she makes me leave it on OFF most of the time when we 1st get in...
Does this make sense or happen to any of the rest of you?

That's the problem I have. If it's 50 out and the computer senses it's too hot in the car it should know to take air from the outside and not turn the AC on. It's irritating that the AC turns in when its 50 out

If you have had all the updates try pulling battery cable and leave off a half hour or more and put back on. If that doesnt work than take in to dealer.
