Auto-Open Garage Door when Carbon Monoxide levels too high

In another thread, the possibility of the GC starting by accident and filling the garage (and home) with Carbon Monoxide was raised. Ultimately, lots of ideas were given and it was correctly pointed out the Jeep can't run long enough (30 minutes tops) via the Remote Start to create enough of a problem. However, after thinking about this more, I did some online searches. Ultimately, no matter what we say or do, there is still a chance something could go wrong with any vehicle. Or we could obviously leave the vehicle running ourselves. So, what do you do about Carbon Monoxide build up? How about a way to automatically have your garage door open?!?

Re: Auto-Open Garage Door when Carbon Monoxide levels too high

Has anyone, by any chance, heard of or tried this? I would be interested to hear how it works in real life. Haven't researched it beyond finding it exists so far.

It's designed by a guy right up the street from me. Here's an article and a link to the eBay sale

But what if your power is out when this happens?

Well, I suppose there is ALWAYS a perfect storm scenario, but the one you suggest is theoretically solved by having a power outage plan in general. You can have a generator automatically kick in. Maybe there is even a garage door battery back up. In the end, I would just hope one doesn't leave the car running AND lose power the same night!

Right down the street?!?! Small world. Can you find a link to working video of the product in action? It appears there was one on the news site but it doesn't work. Shows up as "private."

Liftmaster makes a garage door opener with a battery backup.

But what if your generator fails?

My point is that you're already presuming a perfect storm -- that someone accidentally presses the remote start button TWICE while in range of the car, AND that the remote start feature is broken in such a way that it won't turn off after 15 minutes.

Personally I believe that the probability of the CO detector failing and leaving your garage door wide open for thieves is much higher than the probability of you accidentally filling your garage with CO.

You beat me to it, TS. I have that model in one of my 3 bays. It provides enough battery juice for over 20 open/close cycles during a full power outage. I had it installed back when I had that broken spring situation that was written up in another thread. Considered upgrading all 3 motors but decided one was enough for emergency use. Slightly off topic here, but another benefit of this upgraded opener is that it comes with some type of spring assembly that makes is super-quiet.

Why not have a carbon monoxide/smoke alarm tied in to your other detecters. If one goes off, they all go off.

In this day and age, there should be LOADS of options. How about a phone call with a pre-recorded message to wake you up!!

You should have CO monitors on all floors of your home (just like smoke detectors). You can now buy smoke detectors that also detects CO and natural gas. They are inexpensive and a vital safety monitor.
The Jeep will only run 15 min max on auto start.
