Re: Autoweek's take on the Summit Ecodiesel

I think it's a bit loud and reminds me of a Peterbilt in the winter. However, now that it is warmer outside, the engine is much quieter. I do appreciate the over 30 MPG (calculated) on a recent trip from Denver to Santa Fe with some rural sightseeing off the beaten path to Angle Fire and over some passes. The trip back was 27.4 with some additional Denver city driving and a short trailer towing stint. Quite impressive, better than my 6 cylinder Outback.

I wish someone would use a db sound level meter and settle this. Sure, it sounds like a diesel because it is. Gas engines fast idle in the winter and I suspect are just as loud...just different. So what if the sound is different? Inside the GC diesel, driving at any speed, it is a very quiet experience....better than many other SUVs I've owned.

Any doubters who are interested should clear their minds of prejudice and go drive one. Anti-diesel bias in the US amazes me.

Re: Autoweek's take on the Summit Ecodiesel

If the worst criticism is that the engine is a bit louder than they 'd like, we are deep into first world problems.

I didn't say it is bad, just louder. I love the Diesel and am glad I opted for this engine. It is a GREAT tow vehicle and fun off road as well.

Re: Autoweek's take on the Summit Ecodiesel

Drove the BMW X5 diesel, Touareg TDI, Audi Q7 TDI, Mercedes ML350 Bluetec and Porche Cayenne Diesel, among others, before settling on the Jeep and the Jeep's diesel engine definitely had the loudest, most noticeable diesel clatter of the bunch.

Wasn't a factor in our decision but I don't think the AW writers are out to lunch on this one.

If you've got the diesel model and an iPhone you can check the db levels yourself. There are several free apps, I have one on my phone. For reference a normal conversation is around 80 db. Just try and keep comparisons be vehicle constant by standing the same distance away and using the same locations.
Also keep in mind that every 10 db increase is a doubling of the level. Such as 90 db is twice as loud as 80 db. Good luck.

The noise level in my vehicle mostly depends on the song.
