Re: Awful Gas Mileage

Another thing I've noticed with mine is with all of these speeds, these things really like to roll. Especially from 45+ MPH or higher. I've found I can get off the gas well before an intersection where the light is red, and roll a long way with my foot completely off the gas.

As soon as I do the MPG goes to 99 MPG and stays there until the speed drops below 25 MPH. This saves a lot of fuel in traffic. It also saves wear and tear on your brakes as well. You can really push this if you use the paddle shifters, and wait as long as possible before downshifting.

Well, there's a lot of rolling mass there: some 4800 lbs. or more.

That's 400 lbs more than my full size F-150 I previously owned.

I think it's more the transmission, than the weight. My F-150 has the 4-Speed Automatic Overdrive. As soon as I let off, I can feel the transmission pulling the vehicle down in speed. The ZF 8-Speed doesn't do that. You can feel it downshift as you slow, but it really allows the vehicle to coast before it does. Almost like pushing the clutch in on a stick shift. Over a tank full of fuel, this adds up. And as I said, with the paddle shifters it increases this, "coasting ability".

Re: Awful Gas Mileage

I have also noticed my 2014 Summit V8 will coast nicely, however this is only from speeds 45ish and above. It actually seems to do the exact opposite at slower speeds and tends to slow on its own fairly significantly at slower speeds.
This is actually probably a great thing for efficiency as from higher speeds coasting more is beneficial, where as slowing more on its own at slower speeds can help in that you don't have to mash the brakes as much.

Re: Awful Gas Mileage

Thanks for giving me the advise. I noticed that a lot of you have the hemi and its weird how I'm getting about the same mileage that you are all getting with short trips and I have the V6.

A lot depends on driving style - a Hemi driven sensibility (no jackrabbit starts drag racing from stop light to stop light) with the ZF, ECO mode, and MDS, can get better mileage than a Pentastar and many other smaller engines that are driven aggressively.

Awful Gas Mileage

^^Yeah a Hemi coasting down a hill uses less gas cause it's using less cylinders than the Pentastar. But accelerating, where it really matters, it uses more gas. It also weighs more.
