Awful Gas Mileage

Hello

I've recently moved to Orlando for law school and I've noticed that lately I've been getting horrendous gas mileage. I only drive about 5 miles a day or so and I've been averaging 12-14MPG. Has anyone else been getting awful gas mileage? I have my tires filled to 38psi and I only have my bowling balls (about 35 pounds total, never made a difference in mpg in the past) and a golf club.

Also whenever I've had to do short trips I used to get about 17mpg back when my Jeep was newer and I would get around 21-22 on the highway. Also not sure if this or something like it was posted already.

Maybe cheap gas??? Try a top tier station and see if that works.
I use costco and get 19 city / 26 hwy...23avg. when I filled out of town a few weeks back, that dropped to an avg 20mpg...cheap tollway gas

I used to do SAMs club gas before I moved up here and now I go to wawa since it's closer to me than SAMs club. Is wawa cheap gas?

Re: Awful Gas Mileage

My guess is that it has to do with the short trips. When you have some spare time, do a little road trip and see how the fuel economy does on a longer run. No hills in Florida... Should do better when it warms up and keeps a taller gear for a longer distance. If not improved then, time to look for a problem with gas or other mechanical issue.

Re: Awful Gas Mileage

I saw that on my first tank of gas from the dealer, about 12-13mpg (all city)...while driving like grandma on Sunday trying to improve it...I'm currently on my second tank from Chevron, hoping to see some improvement!

Bingo.

That 5 miles means the engine is barely up to operating temperature. You're burning far more fuel in order to achieve proper combustion when the engine is cold. You're probably just about up to optimal running temperature when you get to your destination.

If that's mostly in traffic, it's going to be even worse.

Re: Awful Gas Mileage

Since you've used this brand of gas before without issues I am thinking it's not the gas but the continuous short drive. The stop and go traffic in Orlando is awful. I was in Orlando last week and at some intersections it took 3 traffic light sequences just to get through some intersections. My Jeep in normal city driving alone gets just under 18 mpg.

Question? In that 5 mile run are you driving in heavy traffic with a lot of long traffic lights?

(On a side note) I had my Jeep in for service and they must have kept it idling for sometime because when I picked it up the milage indicator read 2 miles a gallon less than when I brought it in. (18.3 down to 16.1)

Re: Awful Gas Mileage

Yeah unfortunately with such a short commute I would say half of the drive the car is still warming to operating temp. Short commutes always play a toll on fuel economy as the vehicle is trying to get to operating temp. Be glad you are in FL, if you were north in winter fuel economy would be horrendous on a 5 mile commute when it's 20 degrees outside!

Re: Awful Gas Mileage

I have a similar commute and I see 7-10MPG in the winter and 12-14MPG in the summer. With that short of a commute mileage will be terrible. There is no way around it unless you get an electric vehicle. Planting the pedal on the floor on a regular basis doesn't help either...
