Back end resale V8 worth over $2000 more than V6?

I have to purchase so I think about back-end resale after a few years. $2000 to buy a V8 now, but on the back end do you think I'll actually get more than that in return as people prefer V8's?

Lets see...in a few years 89 octane fuel should be around $6 a gallon. What do You think?

Hard to say. I kinda doubt it, but it depends on the buyer; if they want to tow or do serious offroading, they may prefer the Hemi. If they just want an around town vehicle, then I doubt they'll want it $2000 badly. My guess is that it will most likely depreciate at the same rate of the rest of the vehicle. If the vehicle itself has half its value, the Hemi might increase the value $1000.

Re: Back end resale V8 worth over $2000 more than V6?

I searched on Autotrader - one time with V8 with leather and Navi, and the other time with V6 with leather and Navi, 2008-2010, and <30,000 miles. The V8's consistently were offered about $4000 more than the V6's. I'm starting to think the better deal is to buy a V8...
I know the difference between the two engines is less this time around so maybe $2000-$3000 premium is more reasonable, but still.

I wouldn't trust what people are asking for something, because it doesn't necessarily mean they're getting it. For more accurate prices based on actual sales, go to Edmunds.com and fill out the TMV (True Market Value) form in the appraise a used car area.

The $2k adder is not just for the Hemi (V8) engine. It is bundled with a tow package and QDII 4WD system (the later on MY11).

For those who use their vehicle for towing, there will be value and appeal of having the Hemi. Mid-grade vs. regular fuel, the owners manual states the regular is acceptable but mid is preferred. So this shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I would buy the engine that best fits your lifestyle and need(s). Don't worry so much about resale. It is difficult to predict. Other factors will contribute more such as quality, reputation and the overall economy.

In general, JGC's with both powertrains have been selling well. Again, go with the engine that best fits your situation.

Regards,
NHman

Re: Back end resale V8 worth over $2000 more than V6?

According to my dealer, when I asked about doing a swap to an SRT, he said the 4WD V8 Overland is the single most desirable WK2. It's a supply and demand thing. Lots of V6 2WD's, not so many V8 4WD's. I think you will get your $2K back plus some in 2 or 3 years. Honestly, the difference between 16MPG and 18MPG combined is pretty irrelevant, even at $6 / gallon. Both values suck!

It would all depend on where you live and what local buyers want. I have been negotiating with my local dealer for a 2012 V6 Overland and he has been desperately trying to sell me a 2011 V8. They have 5 on their lot and the sales manager remarked that he ordered too many V8's as he thought that's what people would want. They have sold lots of V6's so it really does depend on the local market and what people want to use their new Jeep for.

I would say probably not going to get that all back on re-sale. Although, like others have said, it all depends on the buyer(s).

IMO, never buy a vehicle or get options solely based on resale. if you want a V8, get one, it will most likely be worth more years down the road than a V6. By how much? who knows. The real question is, is the V8 worth the 2000 dollars to you right now.

Yes, it does depend on where you live AND the dealer. Mine had V6's, even at the $395/mo lease deal sit on his lot while he delivered V8 after V8 ordered WK2's. What seems to be unique about mine here in FL is the 4WD. Everyone buys a 2WD down here thinking they will never need it then come resale they get hosed because all the wholesalers want 4WD so they can sell to the northern market.

When I sold by 2WD TBSS on ebay I got 20+ emails asking if it was 4WD (they obviously can't read, the title was 2WD TBSS) fully 80% of the people who called or emailed were looking for 4WD. I expect it to be even worse with a Jeep. Besides, who buys a 2WD Jeep anyway?????

Agreed, if 2WD get a station (estate if euro) or similar. Generally speaking, you are buying a Jeep for 4WD capability.
