Battery life

How long should I expect a 2014 Summits battery to last? Purchased in July of 2013.

Re: Battery life

That's about when my '14 was built/delivered, and I'm thinking mine's coming up in the next year.. 4 years is when I start to think about replacement, based on prior experience..

YMMV of course..

Re: Battery life

Thanks and I agree. Since this is the first battery I have that is not in the en gin compartment, i was hoping it would last longer? Also Advance auto says that AGM batteries last 2X longer so for my climate that would be six yrs. But who knows.

Re: Battery life

I usually replace batteries at the 5 year mark always figured you were on borrowed time much beyond that and it wasn't worth getting stuck over the little bit more you might get out of them. I was thinking maybe 6 on the AGM. I think an AGM will last a little longer than regular but 2x seems like a lot.

Re: Battery life

The AGM batteries I've had routinely see 6+ years without a problem. Especially one like in our Jeep's, being inside under the seat (less exposure to temperature swings and heat from the engine compartment.) And really I say 6 years but it's probably even more. The AGM battery in my Benz, which is in the trunk, is original and that car is a 2004 with 140k miles. Absolutely no problems with it. I believe the Jeep will turn off power to things like seat heaters and maybe even the radio if the battery voltage is too low. I'd say if that ever happens to you during normal use then it's time to get a new battery.

Re: Battery life

I've always added water once a year to the non-AGM batteries. My Liberty was 9 years old and still had the original battery, and it started every time in MN winters. I'm not sure what to do to help the AGM batteries last, if anything.

Re: Battery life

My '11 came off of the line in October '10. Don't know how old the battery was when it was installed. So far it is still going strong and has survived the few low 20 degree nights we have had without dragging the next morning. The first cold snap will usually kill a weak battery. I may replace it soon just out of paranoia but I think they will go 6 years for sure.

Re: Battery life

My Cummins has 2 AGM batteries in it ( Sears Platinum..) That are dated Sept 2009 and nothing is harder to turn over than 12 qts of cold 15W-40.... Still crank like new.
I may be wrong, but I think AGM's fail more abruptly than normal lead acid batteries and since it's under the seat and not easy to change..I'd go 6 yrs max if I'm keeping it much longer than that. But if I was looking to sell or trade around then, I wouldn't worry about it....

I don't know as I've never had a AGM battery long enough to fail yet. I can say from my experiences with conventional lead acid batteries in my 02 GC that the failures were extremely abrupt with no warning of impending doom. These were "8 year" batteries and every one of them failed at almost 3 years to the day.

Re: Battery life

My regular non AGM battery failed abruptly. Went to a store with no starting issues. After 10 minutes, went back to a battery that couldn't crank the vehicle.
