Although the Rubicon comes with a lot of factory implemented mods common to Wranglers, check around any local offroad enthusiasts, dealer techs, etc.
You might be able to create an even better vehicle by picking up an older Wrangler and adding the electric lockers, winch, better axles, lift, etc. yourself, and save enough money to put towards a 4.0 stroker.

Re: Being tempted by a Rubicon...need advice

I had an '00 TJ Sport back in the day. Personally, I don't think Wranglers should have four doors. Then again, back when I had my TJ, I didn't think "real Jeeps" had anything other than round headlights.

The cons with mine were already posted here: not enjoyable for any drive over about 45 minutes or an hour. On the highway it was incredibly loud. The rear seat barely fit my (then) 12 and 9 year old sons. There was no storage room in it anywhere.

The pros were: the top and doors came off easy. The sound bar worked. Sorta. Chicks dig it like you wouldn't believe (seriously, they'd just hop in and ask for a ride while I was sitting at stop lights; I am not a ruggedly handsome man, either, so that wasn't it).

Oh, that reminds me of another con to the TJ: the short wheelbase made it incredibly easy to swap ends unexpectedly in slippery/snowy conditions. But that brings to mind one of the pros: With the 4.0L six, manual tranny and lockers it didn't matter that my ex-wife's rural, winding driveway was under 3' of snow and I couldn't find it. I just drove across her front lawn. Made her husband-that-year real happy.

Now that I'm older and more mature (ha), the GJC does it for me. With the Overland trim, it's surprisingly up-scale. The HEMI allows for occasional fun. The 4WD lets me get through the snow and slippery stuff with ease. I toyed with the idea of another Wrangler (2-door, natch), mostly just to get my wife worked up. She suggested if I wanted a mid-life-crisis-mobile I should get a Porsche or Corvette and be done with it, ruining all my fun. I did have the dashboard hula girl in my TJ, btw. She was floating around the garage for years, but when I bought the GJC, she mysteriously disappeared. Hmmm...

Of course, an '00 TJ doesn't really compare to a current, stretched out Rubicon, but...four doors? Nah, that kills it for me right there.

Re: Being tempted by a Rubicon...need advice

I have not had a desire (too many kids) to own a Wrangler (I do think they look pretty cool) but I find it interesting after reading about the ride qualities on road. We have a couple of fairly affluent suburbs here in Columbus and it seams like the vehicle of choice for juniors and seniors in High school is the four door Rubicon. When I think about it in high school for me it was all about the look and not the comfort

Re: Being tempted by a Rubicon...need advice

At 18 -early 20 your body can take the abuse. At that age I would party all night, slept on the floor and in the morning grab my skis and go ski all day. Party again in the evening. That was called good weekend in my book.

That being said I am not sure if I would be able to do that anymore. Even though I can definitely handle bumpy ride of Jeep better vs cushy ride of Buick (which makes me sea sick).

I had a 2011 grand Cherokee overland and loved it. However, it was a bit boring as I had a luxury car for comfort, so I traded it in for a 2014 Rubicon X. The Rubicon is fun, unless you have to drive for more than 30 minutes, it is a bit rough for me. Then, I needed to stay commuting back into NYC and didn't want to ruin the luxury car, so I decided to get a 2015 GC Summit and it is awesome! They didn't want to offer me enough for the Rubicon X, so I kept it but don't use it much except for deep snow and pulling card out of mud and snow. If you drive a lot you will not be happy with the Rubicon coming from a GC.

The JK Unlimited is much more useful and comfortable than my old Jeeps or 2 door. I love my wife's GC and it runs like a bat on the highway. A Wrangler is a cool signature vehicle so were a lot of teens at the HS I used to teach at who drove those or their parents expensive sedans.
