Being tempted by a Rubicon...need advice

I'm tempted to look at replacing my Grand Cherokee with a Rubicon, so wanted to get advice from anyone that moved from a Wrangler or has one now. What are the pros/cons in your opinion of a GC vs Wrangler? I know I would definitely be losing some of the lux of the GC, but just love the toughness of the Rubicon.

You should drive one and see if you like it. If you're going offroad a lot then it's a no brainer to switch over. If you just like the looks, well... Consider what you're giving up in terms of comfort, ride quality, cargo space, noise and fuel economy. The design of the wrangler hasn't really changed a lot over the years, you could always keep the GC and get an old TJ for around $8k.

Good call on the used route! Would be much more tempted to take it off-road for some fun if it was $8k vs $40k 👍

Haha! Perfect summary 👍

One of my friends that has a Rubi as one of their daily drivers said this, which seems to be right in line with everyone else...

"Unless u are going to pimp it out they don't look as good stock. Then when u lift and put the better tires on them u lose the smooth ride. Plus I can tell u from experience riding in the back is no fun."

Re: Being tempted by a Rubicon...need advice

Good question...I've had the same thoughts as well...until I drove one a couple of times as rentals. 2014 Unlimited 4x4 that is.

Terrible as a daily driver commuter vehicle, very rough ride, and I missed all the creature comforts of my 2014 Overland. If you still have the itch to make the change to a Rubicon 4 dr someday, I'd wait until 2017 when the redesign model comes out...independent front suspension for an improved highway ride & lot's of new aluminum outer panels to decrease weight.

Think I'm leaning towards the GC as daily driver and finding a few year old used Rubicon for a weekend trail rider. Definitely convinced that I would miss the Overland niceties if I went for a straight swap, but would love to own a JK at some point

I had a 2008 Limited WK with the 4.7L V8. I then got a 2012 Rubicon Unlimited with the V6. I'm right now waiting for my new 2015 WK2 Overland with the V8 to arrive.

I'm going back to the WK2 because I don't do enough off road to offset the compromises of the Rubicon as a daily dirver. In an ideal world, I would get the WK2 as a daily driver and keep the Rubicon as a dedicated off roader.

For my uses the WK2 is plenty off road capable and awesome on the road. My plan is to do a few tweaks to my WK2 right now to make it a little more capable off road (I think it can easily be made to handle all but the toughest trails with very few tweaks) and sacrifice a little bit of the on road ride while still keeping it very good. Then in a couple years when it is paid off, buy a new one for daily driving and really start working on the old one (my current one) and make it able to handle the rubicon trail in luxury. ;-)

It's funny how I never "needed" the lux before I had it, and now it seems like anything else would be a massive downgrade - lol
