Best information to bring when negotiating price?

This post is meant to be broad in terms so that anyone shopping for a new or used Jeep GC can reference it.

I am personally shopping for a Jeep at this moment. What information would you bring to the dealership to ensure you're getting the lowest MSRP possible?

Currently I have the following information to help me negotiate the price:

- Another dealerships workup sheet (with lowest MSRP ive encountered yet for the style of vehicle I want).
- Email correspondence with a dealership confirming availability of the vehicle and its price.
- Comparable vehicle printouts from Carmax
- Comparable vehicle printouts from other dealerships

Any other key pieces of information that could be of value for either USED or NEW Jeep GC purchasers?

Re: Best information to bring when negotiating price?

TrueCar worked really well for me. Brought a copy of the lower price dealer to my dealership and they matched it.

Re: Best information to bring when negotiating price?

Invoice pricing helps. There are many websites that can help you determine invoice, like edmunds.com. I've found that I can easily negotiate better than a trucar quote.

Try to deal with an internet salesperson. Sometimes they will can you a better price.

Be polite when negotiating. If you feel things aren't going your way, be ready to walk out. You'll be amazed how quickly the price can come down at that point!

Good luck.

Re: Best information to bring when negotiating price?

Forget "MSRP". You need to negotiate off Invoice Pricing. (The two group buys noted here in JG are both greater than 5% off invoice prior to other available incentives) You can also get 1% off invoice no-haggle purely by using the Chrysler affiliate program which is available to folks who work for certain employers or folks who are members of certain organizations, such as Tread Lightly.

Re: Best information to bring when negotiating price?

^^^Bill copied me!! Hehe

I sent an email to all dealers on exactly what I wanted and what was their best price. No running around or calling people. Only time I showed up was to pick up the vehicle and sign papers. You don't want to negotiate off of MSRP but rather Invoice Price. Remember that the dealer is getting 2-3% from FCA on the vehicle so they could easily go that far below. Now if you have a discount through work (which might be 1% below invoice) that can also help the final price. But in the end, you do what works for you.

Re: Best information to bring when negotiating price?

I'm in the process of negotiating on a 15 GC LTD 4wd with nav and roof. So far I have 2 dealers at 4.5% below invoice with a Tread Lightly membership and I know there could be a bit more room there depending on the particular dealers "holdback". I did a little better than that on my 13 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara but I bought it on 12/29/2012 (end of month, end of year!).

Re: Best information to bring when negotiating price?

Agree with others above: Use the interwebs and email to your advantage. Look at Truecar, as well as any affiliate programs you may be a part of (Costco or BJ's member? They have a program similar to Truecar...). If you already know exactly what you want, you deal with the internet departments of every dealer you wish to work with, and you effectively put your business out to bid. Lowest bidder wins...

It may be important to keep some things in mind: If a dealer out of state can save you $1000-2000, and you can get a one way flight, plus time/fuel, even hotel back for less, then a roadtrip may be worth it. I used the 5% below invoice offer at Koons in VA to my advantage with dealers here in FL - I told them flat out I could get it, and they needed to come within $500. Someone matched it outright, and then I got the $500 coupon in the mail before delivery, and life was good...

Re: Best information to bring when negotiating price?

Determine the Edmunds.com True Market Value of the specific vehicle you want with all of the options you're looking for. Print that out and start your negotiations with a figure well below that.

Figure out the trade in and resale values of your trade and negotiate your trade in based on that.

If you don't already have financing lined up, know your credit rating and the best APR you can get, and demand the same rate or better.

When the dealers see that you've done your homework, they usually don't waste as much of your time with their nonsense.

Can you provide more information on your Tread Lightly membership?

I just got off the phone with Mark for the Texas Group Buy. He told me to join that to get the additional percentage off invoice.

Is there a specific membership level im supposed to purchase in order to get additional pricing discounts?

Yes, u have to join at the $100 level. Also note that u will be charged a $75 program use fee (everyone pays that for using an Affiliate control number). Also, u cannot transact/take delivery until your TL control number is active in the system for 30 calendar days from issuance which is up to a week after u join online as they only assign/mail them on Fridays. They take a day or two to process your app so if u join today u won't b assigned til next Friday. Only an issue if wanting to drive one off lot.

Net net is it saves $2-300 ish so worth it if u r ordering

I actually joined and paid for the $100 membership yesterday. So fingers crossed I made the cut for them to ship my packet out today.

I order my 2015 Overland yesterday as well from Mark at River Oaks Jeep in Houston. The timing is going to be pretty close on delivery vs membership. But we should be able to make it work

Maybe what we need is Affiliate Pricing for some "Nth" level of paid membership for JeepGarage? Wonder what it would take...
