Re: Bull Bar Question

i like this but i think the bar above is over kill. thats just me
http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server20...0.1280.jpg?c=2

4 reasons i wouldn't go with this:
1-cost
2-you have to cut your stock bumper (not a HUGE deal)
3- the back bumper wont match
4- the extra weight

Re: Bull Bar Question

I bought a front and rear bull bar setup...I got the Aries 3" Bull bar with Skid plate for the front: This one http://www.carid.com/aries-automotiv...FdgZgQod-JEA3A

Super nice overall..but in the chrome finish they sent me brackets with a crappy black paint job...so I took the brackets and had them powdercoated in silver..

This bumper bolts onto the frame where the front tow hooks on the 2014 overland are bolted on. So you just remove the Tow Hooks and bolt these brackets on and you're done...I never put it on and have no intentions of ever using it at this point...but with the brackets and where they mount...i'm guessing it would be a pretty stout setup...and probably wouldn't cave in with a light fender bender...but If you hit something hard I don't think this would totally prevent front end damage...

On the Rear ...I bought this setup:http://www.carid.com/2014-jeep-grand...-11061471.html

I have the rear sensors on my Jeep and there was NO WAY to mount this bumper without interfering with the sensors...no matter how I mounted the bumper it sets off the "Park Sense" sensors...Makes sense though because there just needs to be an object NEAR the sensors to set it off...so it detects the bumper and thinks you're backed into a wall...I had to shut off my rear sensors to make this bumper work...it's been like that for a year now...I just accepted the fact that I can't use the sensors...but everytime you get into the car you get an alarm that shows you're sensors(Park Sense) is turned off and it's kind of annoying...

Id be very interested in that bull bar. The problem is that it will probably cover up the camera (tech package). I havent really seen any bars that are opened on the bottom for the camera.

Re: Bull Bar Question

This Bull bar has a removable skid plate as do many of these...not sure it would clear the front camera though...I don't have the adaptive cruise so I wouldn't even be able to test fit it for you...

Shoot me a pm if you have any questions...I may be able to try mock mounting it so you can see what it looks like on the front

This is one data point that I'd like to share: my cousin who does a LOT of 4X4 off roading and is very experienced says these things are mostly cosmetic, and when in an accident even a mild fender-bender the bull bar collapses into the front end and actually causes more damage. Of course this depends on strength and quality, and type.

Where I live I have seen Highway Patrol SUVs (Ford Expeditions) with bumper bars to push vehicles off the road. These look VERY strong and I may install one of these instead of the more cosmetic types of bull bars.

Some thoughts I wanted to share here. Like I said, I know bull bars are very popular. I never had an accident with my Honda and its bull bar, but I can see how more damage can happen with it as opposed to without it.
Yes and Yes.
Cheap 'bull bars' will simply collapse into the front end and cause more damage. My brother experienced this way back in the mid-80s with his F150. Took it off and threw it in the corner of the garage.

The police style 'push bars' are a completely different story, and you will pay good money for such an item.

I actually found a site that builds them for police cars, but haven't asked about pricing.

I can't find the site right now... I have bookmarks on 4 different computer and I'm sure it's on one of the other 3.

Re: Bull Bar Question

Although this isn't really a bull bar, this is the setup I have. It does take a little bit of modification to install. I think it will hold up pretty well in an accident (or if I feel like giving someone a little push) as it is bolted directly to the new front frame you have to install as well. It also has the added advantage of letting you install a winch if you want. I have the front park sensors and the ACC Sensor and they both work fine with this setup.
My install included a pre-runner as well but you can leave that out and then you wouldn't have to modify it for the ACC sensor. All of the parts are from Rocky Road Outfitters and they have more pictures and pricing on their website. Good luck with your search!

PS. The last couple pictures are the factory frame piece you have to replace and the piece you replace it with.

Re: Bull Bar Question

Here are a few more pictures from their website showing the different options...the last one is like mine just without the pre-runner I mentioned earlier.

Todd when you find that site please share the info. Thanks.

I've seen my local PD's SUVs with push bars around town. They look very strong. One day if the timing is right I will ask one of them about it and see what info I can get. Pictures if I can get them. Will share here if I do.

I found the manufacturer my local PD is using: Setina.
