Bump Shift - When?

I've been playing a bit with the bump shift in my v6 JGC. Mostly on accelerations/passing at highway speeds.

I've noticed the downshift-upshift combination in Automatic feels a bit late and abrupt. The manual bump upshift in particular, feels so much smoother, barely noticeable actually.

When do you bump-shift? And is this method any more or less efficient (MPGs) than letting Auto just do its thing?

It might not be shifting at all. When you upshift, you're just giving the computer permission to use the higher gear, not commanding it to shift up immediately.
