Burning oil

I know that it is normal for a new car to burn a little oil as it breaks in, but at 2200 miles I'm still burning oil.

So, those of you with a few miles on your new rig...when did you notice your oil consumption stop?

Re: Burning oil

I have 8,000KM on mine, first oil change at 1200KM, second done at 7000KM. Never has used any oil. Big question is how much are you using? I have seen new engines use some oil in the first couple thousand but it should not continue past this imo. If it is still using and not leaking then you should make sure dealer is aware and issue is well documented just in case it does not clear up. Have you had to add much and have you done first change yet?

Re: Burning oil

Sorry I missed your thread. I'm on this forum daily and, regretably, didn't feel the need to do a search. Sorry for the repeat thread.

That said, I'm burning about the same amount. Hope it's just break-in.

Re: Burning oil

I think mine might be slowing down. I was down a half a quart (1/2 fill line) Took a trip last week 500 miles and it was at the same level yesterday. Hopefully it is leveling out now. Either that or my dip stick isn't showing the correct level and filling over 1/2 is overfilling the engine.

Re: Burning oil

The hemi holds 7 quarts with a filter change. When I change the oil and filter and use 7 quarts the level on the stick is half way between add and full. Since the manual says 7 I don't top it off. The level never changes between oil changes.

By filling to the full mark you may be overfilling the crankcase. This will cause windage, poorer mileage, and occasionally oil consumption.

Chrysler should have the dipstick marked properly for the 7 quart fill, but evidently they don't. My wife's '09 Charger is the same way. I just look at it as a safety measure, if the stick says add I know that I'm only 1/2 quart low not a full quart.

I topped the Charger off once, it consumed oil until reaching the half way point on the stick then remained at that level until change. Hence the seven quarts and no topping off since. No oil consumption when I do this.

Re: Burning oil

Parker you are on point...this has also been my experience. I am in the military and when I was stationed in Germany and running on the autobahn my Dodge Shadow would burn oil to the mid cross-hatch area then stop no matter how often I would fill it to the top. When using synthetic oil and I was above the mid cross hatch area the oil wouldn't burn but the valve cover would start leaking.

The cross hatch area is a SAFE ZONE if I'm in it I'm safe. If below I add if above I drain to get back into the ZONE. Just my two cents....Also this is my 5th Jeep Grand Cherokee and I've loved everyone of them.

How often are you guys checking your oil in between changes? I have to admit I'm a 3K interval guy but I never ever check my level between changes.

And thanks for your service, WK2OII (same to all other armed services JG members).

Re: Burning oil

Parker, I think that might be the case with mine. It seems to be holding at the half way mark now. After the first oil change at the dealer when I got home it was reading half way I filled it back up to full and a week later it was down to half again. It has been holding there ever sense. So I was starting to wonder if my dipstick was off.

How is everyone else's doing? Are most reading full and staying there?

I do not like the fact that I only have a half a quart if the dip stick is true before I am too low.

I am a 3-4 k service guy, but I check it probably once a month or just before going an any longer drives (basically out of the DC area). With all my jeeps I have yet to really find a problem when I make those checks other than topping off washer fluid but its a habit from work I guess to check the vehicle every day.
