Re: Busted fuel tank

Road damage vs quality should be reasonably obvious if you have a picture.
It is pretty hard, but not impossible, to have something hit it and put a gash without
leaving scratches on at least one end of the gash.

SMALL holes in tanks are repairable. Pain in the neck to do as you need to find a
glue that will hold on the tank material AND hold thru any residual gas in the tank
or even fumes if you were to drain it. Plus a good idea to add strengthening
material across any hole where first you glue the hole then you add the strengthening material by gluing it on.

If it's a falling or flying object, depending on the state, it would fall under comprehensive. Not that I am encouraging insurance fraud. That wouldn't look good for me being an insurance guy. ; )

May have just been a freak occurrence of something your wife hit but the mopar skid plates are fairly cheap if you add them yourself so maybe something to think about if you are driving conditions where that could happen again. a little awkward but they are just bolt ons you can do in your driveway. I paid like $410 for all 5 of them shipped which included both gas tank skids.

I did plan on installing plates in the future but was not fast enough, now I'm thinking ill probably just do the fuel tank plates for now because I don't plan on off-roading till next summer. Where is the best place to get plates online? The shipping seems very expensive. Ill check with the dealer on there price because it might be worth the extra if there's no freight charge.

Re: Busted fuel tank

I gotta say this is your lucky week... Remember the family in the minivan in Milwaukee that exploded from a truck brake rotor bursting the tank?

I put the skid plates on my car for the same reasons as above.. Those tanks are sitting ducks. Glad everyone is OK.

My wife would have gone to work, and tried to drive home and then called me out of gas... ; )

My wife says she didn't feel or hear anything on the freeway. Anyway the dealers checking it out tomorrow and im not expecting it to be warranty, the car has 2300 miles on it. Just wondering if anyone knows if the tanks are repairable. The price for part alone is 900 plus.
You know...
This is exactly why I want to get the fuel tank skid plates.
I don't think they would help bashing around off road, but they should stop foreign object damage on the highways.

Re: Busted fuel tank

Picked up the car today, new fuel tanks and they installed skid plate at no extra charge for labor. Of course when I fill up the tank the gauge only shows 7/8 full and there's a loud noise under passenger seat when it take off at a turn( like whacking an antenna then the noise fades out) she's going back Friday to get looked at.

Why not? Ever seen one? Or lifted one while lying on your back under your Jeep when installing it? .. They're pretty formidable. They aren't indestructible, but they will "help" off road. I'm sure of that.

PS, sorry to hear about the bad install. I'm sure they'll get it right eventually.

Guess I should have been more clear...

By "bashing' I mean dropping the tire off a rock/high-point when there is a rock under your fuel tank and the entire weight of the vehicle comes down on the fuel tank skid plate.

Some of the skid plates I've seen would support the entire weight of the vehicle, but those are made for that type of "fun".

For just general romping around off road, heck yeah! It would be MUCH more protected with the plate than without.

If you're doing that kind of bashing in a GC off road, you should probably look at getting a beater vehicle for that kind of thing.

The Mopar plates are plenty fine for what the vast majority of owners will want to do.
