Busted fuel tank

Hey everybody, had some Friday the 13th bad luck. My wife calls me this morning in a panic that our new 2015 WK2 Summit is leaking gas when she gets to work. After the Fire department cleaned the gas (we felt bad cause I think we woke them up, it was 5 am) checked out the tank and saw a 2-3 inch gash. My wife says she didn't feel or hear anything on the freeway. Anyway the dealers checking it out tomorrow and im not expecting it to be warranty, the car has 2300 miles on it. Just wondering if anyone knows if the tanks are repairable. The price for part alone is 900 plus.

If it's road damage, your comprehensive coverage may cover this.

Re: Busted fuel tank

Is it safe to assume nobody went off-road without the installed shielding underneath? If so, I think it is your car insurance that would cover, not warranty.

Yeah I was thinking that too. With a $1000 deductible still kind of a bummer. Also In not sure if it would raise my insurance rate.

Re: Busted fuel tank

I had my '98 Jeep gas tank punctured (small hole, kind of like from the nail). I found it with a pool of gas and overflowing large plastic bucket underneath, most likely someone was stealing gas.

AFAIK it cannot be repaired, new tank needs to be put in and it is a big job as you can imagine (parts an labor). It was a while ago and I don't recall exact numbers but vaguely remember part was about $700 and it took 5-6 hours . I had it done at the dealer and drove it afterwards for years with 0 issues.

Re: Busted fuel tank

Update: Got a call from the dealer on Saturday and they are covering it under warranty. I was very surprised but I didn't argue. The service advisor stated" it could of been a defective part or you may have ran over something but either way it will be covered" dodged a bullet on that one. They have the parts in stock so I should get it on Monday. I wish I took a photo it looked like someone whacked it with a hatchet.

Re: Busted fuel tank

I jinxed it. Got a call this morning."So sorry it will not be covered under warranty" $897 for parts and $726 for labor" OUCH. Insurance guy said they will try but will probably be considered collision not comprehensive so might not be worth it to claim and get increased rates. BUMMER

Re: Busted fuel tank

That sucks. However it is veeeeery interesting that they have such an odd part in stock.

Re: Busted fuel tank

Maybe some road debris on the highway sliced it opened. The first time I slid under this GC and looked at it and saw those two big plastic gas tanks hanging down I thought that would not take much to tear one of those things opened. Within a week I had ordered the full set of mopar skid plates.

May have just been a freak occurrence of something your wife hit but the mopar skid plates are fairly cheap if you add them yourself so maybe something to think about if you are driving conditions where that could happen again. a little awkward but they are just bolt ons you can do in your driveway. I paid like $410 for all 5 of them shipped which included both gas tank skids.
