buy 2017 jeep JGC or wait for redesign?

hello all!

I im in the market for a new jeep GC altitude 2017 but i am hesitant bc I've
read that there will be a redesign for the 2019 model. I would feel bad
purchasing one now only for it to be the " older model" in only two years.

In my country there is no leasing and it costs 58k

Is the 2019 change in body design confirmed? will it be as drastic as the 2014
redesign ?

wwjd?

The next generation platform will be for the 2020 model year, not the 2019 model year. That's a pretty long wait. If you're interested in an Altitude, you might want to buy it now...there's no guarantee that the Altitude package will continue into subsequent model years, either.

So we've got one guy worried about getting stuck with the last year of a model run, and in the thread right next door we've got another guy who wants to make sure he does get the last year.

Yup. Buy the first year of almost any vehicle and let me know how that works out for ya.

Re: buy 2017 jeep JGC or wait for redesign?

Just to add to the discussion....

I was driving a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland when the new 2011 JGCO hit the streets and I have to tell you I fell in love at first sight! It was a first model year but being completely new provided TONS of upgrades over the 2002. I think my favorite part was being one of the first few new Jeeps on the road. I could drive all week not see another WKII and honestly that exclusivity was pretty awesome. The risk of a first year platform is always there but my experience was that I had a pretty solid vehicle except for the notorious things that continue to have issues even now. Examples: Hemi Water Pump, Clunking rear shocks, Heated seat failure.

That being said because I do not trust any Chrysler product beyond 100k miles so I ended up purchasing a 2017 not expecting much change as it's pretty much the same truck with a different entertainment package and 2 more gears. However my 2017 is leaps and bounds better than my 2011. Even if it wasn't documented anywhere there are significant improvements throughout. The seats are more comfortable the Quadra-lift is better dampened and no matter what you've heard about the 8 speed they have this thing dialed in perfectly. The downside is that I can't leave my driveway and not see a couple nearly identical jeeps driving around. So even knowing I have a much improved vehicle doesn't provide the satisfaction of having it first.

I guess what I'm saying is I wouldn't be afraid to buy a first year vehicle because it will still have significant upgrades over the outgoing platform. Also, for me, having something first really does feel great. Even if all the onlookers are strangers that you will never see again it still feels great to NOT see 400k of the same vehicles driving around. If the WK3 was scheduled to hit the road next year I would have waited for it.

A big example of this was our platform's first vehicle the ML350 in 2006. Soft front differential bearings, 7 speed transmission valve body issues, ACC dial malfunctions, etc. etc. The biggest by far was the soft timing balance gears that they skated around for 10 years till they lost a class action lawsuit brought by thousands of people who paid 4 to 7 grand to repair the motor. That V6 was in all Mercedes V6 cars and SUV's in 2006. First year cars are a crapshoot even if its from Toyota. The 2007 LS460's had to all have their new V8 engines pulled to repair brittle valve springs. They stepped up and recalled them at least. Not Mercedes who screwed everyone once they got out of warranty. I think the biggest risk is new powertrains but anything can go wrong or hopefully not in a new gen car launch. I worked on Volvos and believe me the first year was almost always very bad. Just to keep up their reputation their new gen XC90 is a nightmare. So all you folks waiting on a new platform JGC be careful what you wish for.

Re: buy 2017 jeep JGC or wait for redesign?

I bought a 2011 Grand Cherokee back in 2010 and had very few problems with it. The transmission "jitter" when driving between 40-45 mph was the only thing that bothered me. They fixed that with software.

I was in the same boat this year: wait for 2018 or buy 2017. I decided to trade in the 2011 for a 2017. The deals this time of year appeared to be pretty good.

There is also no guarantee the next generation will look as good as the current model which in my opinion, is the finest looking and most proportionate SUV currently made. It looks good at every angle.

There is also the inescapable fact that manufacturers will engineer cost out of any product to increase profit margins. Less stuff, higher price. Case in point, taking the upgraded sound system out of the Limited package.
