Buy a Laredo & upgrade or buy Limited

I may be stuck in a little bit of analysis paralysis but that's my MO. As I replace my TDI in the fall I'm trying to figure out what model Grand Cherokee I should buy to get the best value while being financially smart. I'm a car guy and I like to work on my cars so I'm willing to invest time to build up a vehicle to my liking if it makes sense. So here is what I'm thinking:

2014 JGC Laredo - cloth with sunroof with less than 45k miles
- replace cloth with Katzkin leather
- add tow hitch (I have a small utility trailer and bike rack - nothing crazy)
- upgrade wheels to Rubicon wheels

Assuming purchase price is $21k plus $2,500 in upgrades gets me to $23,500. Only issue here is it would come with the 5.0 Uconnect and wouldn't have heated seats

2014 JGC Limited - leather with sunroof with less than 45k miles
- add tow hitch if can't find tow package
- upgrade wheels to Rubicon wheels

Assuming purchase price is $27k plus $1,200 in upgrades gets me to $28,200.

Difference in financing cost all said and done is $75 per month @60 months which saves me $4500. I'll be adding the max care lifetime warranty to the vehicle and plan on keeping as long as possible. I don't really care about a power liftgate.

Question for you all - what are your thoughts on these two options? Is the 8.4 Uconnect much better than the 5.0? I'd rather stuff the $75 away in my kid's college fund than spend on myself but I don't want to regret a vehicle choice if I plan on keeping long term. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Buy a Laredo & upgrade or buy Limited

look here(1,2) to see all the extras you might be missing (depending on what packages they both have)

I have a limited, some thing that might make it worth it:
-heated rear and front seats(I live in Arizona, i may only use it 2 months a year, but when you go to work at 4am, heated seats are amazing during the winter months when its 30-40F outside.
-heated steering wheel
-leather seats are pretty good
-8in screen with nav is nice, I have a 8in tablet mounted above it for my music and use that screen for the nav.
-remote start (its hot in Arizona, this is the best part)
-remote rear hatch (convenient)
-9speakers and sub, it sound pretty damn good, but im not an audiophile
-universal garage door opener (I dont think the laredo gets this, maybe in a package)
-mirror blinkers (not really important)
-auto dim driver side and rear view mirrors... it's so helpful
-back up camera
-back up sensors
-driver and passenger, 4way lumbar and 8way power seats
-memory tied to keys (for seat position, mirrors, radio)

I hate all the damn chrome though

The cars you looking at may or may not have some of these features (like I dont have the sunroof )

I dont know if this is all worth $6k, thats up too you... When I bought this I got a great deal on my limited (got it for $3k over the laredo I wanted)

Re: Buy a Laredo & upgrade or buy Limited

thank you for the feedback. I didn't realize that the limited came with all of those features. Memory seats would be huge as I'm 6'4" and my wife is 5'5" so she is always moving my seat whenever she drives my car.

Thank you for also attaching the options overviews.

Re: Buy a Laredo & upgrade or buy Limited

Definitely get the limited. Make sure it's late in the MY Build (August 2013 or later).

Ideally get the 8.4AN Radio which includes the BACKUP CAMERA !!!

Re: Buy a Laredo & upgrade or buy Limited

Plus 1 for the limited. Your wife will also love the fully adjustable passenger seat.

Also, there is a huge difference in the quality of the seat between the Laredo and the Limited. The foam density, quantity, and quality is significantly lower in the Laredo. Most people don't realize this fact, but if you do a side by side compare with a detailed spec sheet of each model from the dealer, every bit of this is delineated for you.

Re: Buy a Laredo & upgrade or buy Limited

I feel ya, Im 6'4" as well, I hate driving any car but mine. Just double check the stuff I listed, apprently some of it's optional
To check the vehicles equipment you are looking at go here
-Put the full VIN where it says VIN and click search

That should tell you everything the jeep your looking at has

By the way, if you go for a limited, try to find the upgraded Bi-xenon models(if cheap enough, might not be though, but they look so much better if you like the LED look and HIDS are a lot brighter), I spent like 1600 adding it to mine, The wiring harness is annoying to make, plus I broke 3 clips on the front bumper, from pulling it off like 6 times getting the harness to work, which is going to cost $400-500 bucks to replace (cant fix the broken clips )

here's my "optional eqiupment"

You're not considering one of the best features of the Limited vs Laredo.... the LED headlamps. Not sure if all Limiteds come with them, though (actually I'm pretty sure they don't - you need to get the technology package or something like that).

I know I have them on my TDI and love the look. Would want the same on the jeep but haven't seen any in my price range. I can spend up to $30k which puts me in range of a used overland (which would be my first choice) but I keep feeling guilty about knowing I could be saving money if I bought a lower trim.

What happened to me? I used to not care. I think I'm just getting old.

I have a 2012 Altitude, and every time I see a 2014+ with the LEDs... I just have to look away

Re: Buy a Laredo & upgrade or buy Limited

You should be able to get a used 2014 (maybe even a 2015) overland for around $30K with 47K miles.

If you want the lights, which I highly recommend, just get a Limited with the Lux package. They are not too common though.

Hands down the limited. Maybe I'm bias because I have one.

Re: Buy a Laredo & upgrade or buy Limited

My opinion is that the Limited offers the most value and flexibility for folks who do not want/need the higher trim levels. Laredo is nice, but has very limited (pardon the expression) options. Limited is what the old Laredo X used to be.
