Re: Buy now or wait for 2012

Milous has already said on this forum that the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi will be offered as a 6 speed (the 5 speed Hemi may also remain available).

Re: Buy now or wait for 2012

What's the benefit of a 6-speed transmission over the 5-speed I have now with my Hemi? It seems flawless to me -- it accelerates and cruises smoothly. I've taken it off road but won't ever tow anything.

I'm new to Jeeps, having just finished 18 years driving a soccer-mom minivan, so maybe my expectations are low. I'm loving the new experience and can't imagine how it could improve.

Re: Buy now or wait for 2012

Andrew- to answer your question on how the 6 speed will improve the Jeep. For one being at different speeds having more gear choices offers a better chance of being in a sweet spot in the power-band. Imagine being on the road at say 45 MPH and you need to suddenly hit the gas to avoid something and the jeep drops down from 5th gear to 4th when you really needed it in 2nd or 3rd gear to really move. A 6 speed would do it given the closer ratios. I had the SRT8 Jeep three years ago and it was plenty fast but it has a lot of dead areas in the powerband which an extra gear would have made all the difference.

Second, you will see a slight increase in MPG's.

Third, being closer in gear ratio the Jeep will feel as if it has another 30-50 HP's when accelerating. Best thing you can do is test drive a car that went from a 5 speed to a 6 in the same car you will notice a difference as long as the car was geared out right which so have messed up in the past.

This is my opinion but test drive a car with a 4 speed that was replaced with a 5 speed or something. YOU will notice what I'm talking about. I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on the 2011 GC Overland yet. I was going to wait till 2013 for the 8 speed but if they do come out with a 6 speed 5.7L for 2012 they can count me in.

Re: Buy now or wait for 2012

I am also considering a new WK2 but am probably going to wait until next year.

My concern is this, we all know that the 545RFE is a stout and reliable transmission. If they change it and put this "new" 6 speed transmission in, will it be any good?

We all know that brand new products often have teething problems the first year or two of production.

I am confident that the 5.7 and 545RFE are pretty reliable, but would I be in for nothing but trouble with a new transmission?

I might be more inclined to purchase a late production 2011 rather than take a chance on something new and unproven.

Edit: OK so after reading the other transmission post, it seems that the six speed may be the same as the 545RFE with only a programing upgrade, that would be fine with me.

Re: Buy now or wait for 2012

I would have waited for a 2012 if I had known their would be a 6 spd available but that info was posted the same day I bought my 2011. I plan on keeping this car for 3-4 years and by that time there should be a major update (diesel and new Nav, maybe 8 spd) for the GC and I will get that.

Re: Buy now or wait for 2012

So I went ahead and bit the bullet and got this baby the other day.
It was basically exactly the vehicle I was looking for and got a pretty good deal too. So far 1000 miles into ownership (took a trip with the wife to the parents house in Louisiana), and I must say I'm pretty happy. There are a couple minor quibbles like the Nav screen at just the right angle to make it nearly impossible to read in bright sun, and no illuminated start/stop button but those are minor nuances for now.

Oh anyone have any idea why my RER (I know one fault) won't upload my mp3 files (not protected) from my USB stick. Does the drive have to be in FAT or FAT32 format (currently in NTFS)?

also chrome or black nerf bars? and what's the next mod to do aside from LEDs. I am at your whim

OK now for a little truck porn as it's freshly cleaned.

Museum-quality detailing!

But what's that graffiti on the flipper glass?

That's exactly right. FAT32 with VFAT (long filename support) is your best choice. NTFS is a very complex file system with journaling. Most embedded operating systems don't support it.

Ooh - good truck porn. That's one beautiful color in the sunlight!

As for the rear - I didn't go to an SEC school so I have no dog in this fight.
