Buying jeep in VA living in MA

I found the perfect Jeep grand Cherokee at Koons. However since I live in MA they will not sell me the car since apparently there is some issue with them not able to register the jeep in MA. I told them no problem. I will come down there with cash give me the bill of sale and I will put my transferred plates from my current car on it and drive away. MA allows up to 7 days where you can transfer your plates when you get rid of your old car "7 day transfer law". Apparently that wont work either since Jeep requires them to register all new cars sold by them.
They told me they could register the car in VA for me. Not sure how that is even possible as I do not live there. I would then have to pay VA sales tax. Only problem would be when I register the jeep in MA they would want the sales tax as well since the car was not registered in another state for 6 months.

Anyone have any experience with this?

This is a know problem for folks who specifically live in MA...not many options, apparently.

Re: Buying jeep in VA living in MA

Wow thats weird, never heard of such an issue, but like Jim said apparently its an MA only thing. I have purchased cars from many other states, never a problem.
Like you said you just get the car back to your state and take care of things yourself at the DMV. Hopefully you can get things figured out.

apparently they wont sell the car unless it is registered.
I explained to them I can take care of the registration since MA will let me transfer the plates. All I need from them is a bill of sale.

Re: Buying jeep in VA living in MA

Try to work things out such that you buy the car remotely, register it in MA (and pay any required tax) and then do the pickup....kinda a "100% deposit" scenario.

Re: Buying jeep in VA living in MA

I looked into this a few years ago, my recollection is that I had to pay for the vehicle, the dealer would fedex the paperwork up here, I'd deal with the insurance and RMV to get it registered, then return to VA with the registration and the plates.

I ended up not doing that deal, so I don't know if it would have actually worked..

See if Va offers temp tags. I believe their transport tag is only good in VA. You might have to pay the Sales tax in VA, then pay difference when you register in Mass.

Curious to what you paid compared to what's MA. I am in NH and plan on buying near the metro Boston area as the vehicles are about 2-3k less than NH. Wondering how worthwhile it is going to Koons, I emailed the lady a couple times and even had someone else contact her since they heard she never responded, still never heard back.

I guess when I'm serious to actually buy later this fall I will call.

I was looking at getting a 2017 HA probably around thanksgiving it's looking like. HA Go for about 46-47k here in NH and thr Boston area around 44-45k. If Koons gets a couple grand less than that I guess it's Worth it?

Re: Buying jeep in VA living in MA

I ended up getting one locally instead. one thing to watch out for at Koons is they add the delivery fee on after the price they show. There is also a 599 processing fee. They were also going to add 1,000 more to the price since i was not going to finance. i had to pay cash due to the way I was going to have to register the car in MA. They are a great outfit. Maybe it will be easier for you since you are in the free state of NH.
Also koons will pay for your flight down there up to i think 400.

Re: Buying jeep in VA living in MA

I thought about registering the jeep in VA but my insurance would not cover me as they will not write a policy for a car registered in another state that I do not live in.
Ma would credit me the sales tax though.

Re: Buying jeep in VA living in MA

RJE2, were you dealing with the Group Buy contact at Koons? I'm asking because the financial information you posted doesn't jive with what others have experienced, such as paying extra for not financing.
