Re: Calling All Off Roaders...

I'll be headed up into the Smoky Mountains - Pigeon Forge specifically - for a long weekend in about a month. It'll be my first time up there but would love to hit a few basic trails, nothing crazy. I've been looking a little but didn't see anything within an hour. Anyone have any local suggestions?

Thanks for posting this, I am in the DFW area so I may have to come down there and check the park out.

Got through halfway on some of the Level 3s, but had to turn around and go back on most. I enjoyed giving the low-gear SelecTrac "Rock" setting a good workout. They have some truly gnarly Level 5s for you true rock-crawlers out there. I suggest anyone in the area try and visit at least once, and stop in to Jones Jeeps out front when you enter the dirt drive. The owner is a nice guy and doesn't mind taking time to talk about his shop and Jeeps in general. Here are some pictures from my trip, as well as the attached Full Size 4x4 Map of the park:
Awesome. I'm in the Houston area, so will want to take a ride over there to check it out.

Awesome info. I'm starting a road trip today to ATX and want to do some wheeling with my ATX brother. Later this week, or this weekend or maybe Monday I'll be there.

Thanks for the info!

How was what, Hollister Hills, or wheeling in Texas?

Hollister Hills is a very good place, in that it's a low-cost, controlled and nearby place to practice skills. I often go alone, but of course, alone you have to be more careful. Which I'd rather be anyway. I plan to do most of my wheeling alone, on long road trips, exploring places off the beaten path. An annual pass is inexpensive, about $50 IIRC. And I drive to L.A. often enough that I stop in at Pismo Beach or at Hungry Valley atop the grapevine for more trails.

I wish HH had water, for fording. But we have little water here in N CA.

As for Texas, going wheeling was on my radar but I never went. My brother wasn't interested and we ran out of time. On the way to Austin, however, we hit Titus Canyon Drive in Death Valley, and also the west and east River Roads in Big Bend National Park (BBNP). Titus Canyon was easy, and scenic and picturesque. Fun to do. And then BBNP that was a 50-mile long road and at parts needed high clearance but for the most part I could have done that in my Honda CR-V. Still, it was fun to explore those along the way to Texas.

HTH.

Oh and tuned8e, welcome to California. And check out the Esprit de Four 4X4 club. They hold twice annually '4X4 Safety Clinics' at Hollister Hills and they have spotters to guide you through some challenging obstacles - challenging for a stock JGC which mine is. It has been a very good way for me to practice and learn. There's one coming up on 5/21 if you're interested. Otherwise they hold one in the fall. If you end up going in May let me know, I will be there.

Re: Calling All Off Roaders...

echo7tango : Awesome information man. Greatly appreciate your input.

To answer your question yes, I was inquiring about your time at Hollister Hills specifically. I think you and I generally share the same viewpoint about going about learning at your own pace

Thanks for the heads up about that event May 21st - I just emailed members of their group to ask about event specifics etc (ie: do you need to be a member to participate, etc) But I believe I will plan on being there. Not sure if you want to caravan down there on that day, etc

I just saw a video on YouTube of a couple of WK2s at the same park. I am in Dallas as well and would be interested in heading down there if you ever decide to go.
