Re: Calling All Off Roaders...

Today, I went off roading in my Grand Cherokee and I had lots of fun. It was the first time I took my Jeep in such harsh terrain. Considering that my GC is equipped only with Quadra Trac 1, I was pleasantly surprised with the incredible capability it demonstrated. My brother was in his highly modified Samurai with super low gears and he was dumbfounded by how my GC went through 95% of all he did. I was able to climd pretty steep sandy and rocky hills.

The only off road modifications my GC has is Bilstein 5100 in the front and 32" all terrains.

There were two occasions that I scraped the front lower bumper plastic balance but other than that it did great. I did notice the BLD kicking in frequently.

(I tried uploading a Youtube video here it didn't work)

I was considering trading in my Jeep for a GC with proper low gearing but now I'm questioning the need for that since it handled more than I thought it would. And the fact that mine is almost paid off.

For those doubting the QT1 capabilities rest assured that you can handle pretty rough stuff granted I'm not talking about hardcore rock crawling or something like that. Of course bigger tires and leveling kit at the very least helps a lot.

Cheers.

Mininuke, sounds great. If you're happy with QT1 then you're good-to-go, anything else would be extra expen$e and unneeded complexity, and the x-fer case would just get you lower MPGs. Our stock rigs are very capable, as you and I have found out.

If you have the URL(s) for any videos you shot, just paste them into this thread, it'd be cool to check them out.

To answer your question yes, I was inquiring about your time at Hollister Hills specifically. I think you and I generally share the same viewpoint about going about learning at your own pace

Thanks for the heads up about that event May 21st - I just emailed members of their group to ask about event specifics etc (ie: do you need to be a member to participate, etc) But I believe I will plan on being there. Not sure if you want to caravan down there on that day, etc

Hi Ben, I don't know how I missed your posts from many months ago. I wasn't ignoring you. I will likely do the clinic again in May, it's a good one and I'm lucky that my wife likes them too. If you want to go, PM me and it'd be cool to have our two white JGCs there.

Also, if you want to do a Hollister Hills day let me know. It's a 2-hr drive for you, 1-hr for me. If we spent 2-3 hrs there, maybe 4, that would be plenty. There is an SVRA closer to you, Carnegie, and it's about 1-hr from both of us, you in Novato and me in Sunnyvale, but I've been there 2x before this past summer and there isn't much there for our JGCs. I would recommend you try Carnegie if you're passing by it, but compared to Hollister Hills it is nearly nothing. HH is worth the drive, IMO, and Carnegie almost isn't.

Cheers,
Roy

Re: Calling All Off Roaders...

Here's a video taken by my 11y.o. nephew at Hollister Hills last summer. I didn't take the best line, and when I bounced around it cracked him up.

You can see how low the tire profile is, even with the 32" tires. They're on the 20" rims. I've decided to keep the 20s until such time as they really limit what I can do on them, and then I'll get 18s. I know it'd be better having 18s, but if I don't have to buy them, I won't.

In this video, I can see that having 18s aired down would give me better grip.

Cool video. I suppose the bouncing has to do with the low articulation, low profile tires and the fact that QT1s need to keep the momentum going. Or something like that.

I still can't figure out why videos are not posting. Here is the link.

For some reason in the video the climb does not look that steep. In person it did. There were some pickup trucks that couldn't climb it even with their low gears.

I wish it was a beach. I went to a place in far east El Paso, TX. It's all dessert. I'm going to see if I can figure out how to fix the scratches on the bumper trim.

Re: Calling All Off Roaders...

There I fix it. Not perfect but much better. Notice the balance is not snapped back in. I was waiting for the paint to dry.

Actually that is a good thing. At the beach, all that sand has salt and you need to give a good underbody washing afterwards. In the sands east of El Paso, you don't care so much about that.

Very true. Didn't think of that.

Does anyone have friends at ARB/OME? This lack of lift kit for the 2016s+ is killing me.

Re: Calling All Off Roaders...

To think I'm from El Paso and have been out there in the Jeep and had no idea there were actual trails out East, the ironic part is that i always considered it too deserted to do any off roading.
how was the drive over all, i do always worry about running into a thick bush or sharp rocks. had a bad experience in san bernadino.
