I live about 45 minutes from the Georgetown KY Camry plant. Ive heard there are 120 factories in KY alone that produce parts for the plant.

Re: Camry more "American" than JGC

No suprise here either.

I've bought a number of "foreign" vehicles assembled right here in the good ol' US of A...

Honda Accord - OH

Nissan Xterra - TN

Mercedes Benz C300 - AL

Seems just about every Mopar/Jeep accessory I ever bought for my Grand Cherokee was made in China...

Re: Camry more "American" than JGC

I'd be curious to see this comparison expressed as a dollar value. Would the GC put more money into the US economy even though the total percentage is less?

Re: Camry more "American" than JGC

It's funny that you seldom hear this mentioned when people talk about all the jobs we export. Foreign companies have created a lot of jobs here also. I just learned here recently that the German tranny that goes into the JGC is built in the US.

I don't know if it still holds the title, but for a number of years the Camry was the most American car.

Re: Camry more "American" than JGC

Some Camrys come out of the Subaru Outback plant in Indiana...although that may not continue due to the huge demand for the Subbies. (Toyota has a minority holding in Subaru) Toyota was pretty active in finding manufacturing capacity here in North American when they decided to embrace that model quite a few years ago now and they also wanted their supply chain "short". Hence, all the part manufacturing here, too.

I'm at least glad that article did point out that the difference between the Camry and the JGC in point value from their "measurements" was so small...one had to be the "winner", but still, it was only by a whisker.

Re: Camry more "American" than JGC

take all the foreign cars out of the market and there would be more American cars sold and most of the jobs would transfer.

Re: Camry more "American" than JGC

This article is ridiculous. What is the point? The industries of today are global. The point of saying "American" is due to historical aspects. Jeep is an iconic "American" brand. Toyota will never have that legacy even if they score a perfect 50 on the index.

To me the article was offensive and also provoking. I work deep in the auto industry and it really irks me to hear this rhetoric over and over. It's just like the bumper sticker:

"Out of a job yet? Keep buying Foreign"

Sorry for the rant. The auto industry is growing even more today and no matter what, foreign will continue to build in our country and American will build in foreign countries.
