Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

I need to transport a 7'10 table to the house for weekend fun but I have the automatic lift. Is there a way to keep it down without it being closed and cause no issues? I'd really prefer to not deal with my canoe trailer since I'll be canoeing down the river the very next day.

Re: Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

Good question, i've been wondering the same. I currently want to buy 3 closet doors from Home Depot an each are 81 inches + plus the length of the boxes they come in. I wouldn't want to ask my father or father in law for their truck.

My thought around this since i know the liftgate wont close even with moving front seats up a bit and of course folding the back seats is to maybe tie down the liftgate. But just haven't really checked where. Also, not sure if i would be able to drive off with the gate open or if i'll just keep hearing the dang alert sound the whole way. Luckily for me it wont only be about 3 miles.

Re: Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

My drive is about 2.5-2 miles as well. It's the automatic lift I'm worried about. Will it just give and let me manhandle it? Will it try to re-engage is hurt itself? Is there something else in the jeep that will have a hissy fit?

Re: Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

The lift-gate does allow manual operation, so you shouldn't have much issue tying it down for the intended short trip. You'll want to have other windows open to insure no back-draft of exhaust.

Re: Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

Thank you. Now I just need to figure out what to tie everything to since the table will cover the gate hook and the floor hold downs. Shouldn't be that difficult though

Yes you can!

I was in a hurry and forgot to close mine after loading in some stuff and then drove off.

Re: Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

Just read the manual, is the front passenger seat fold option not standard on all models? Don't know if i can completely fold my front pass seat down since the manual shows a picture of a non power seat and i have power seats? Confused?

Also, Jim the portion of the manual that talks about the liftgate recommends for all the windows to be completely up due to exhaust poison along with not having the rec circulation of the A/C on.

You might be able to squeeze the gate shut. If you put the seats all the way forward and reclined up there is about 82" from back of seat to gate.

It has to rest on the center console.

You probably can't stack 3 though. And it's bit uncomfortable driving.
But I've got a couple doors in before.

I've also reclined the passenger seat all the way back and got some long stuff in.

Re: Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

If you drive with the gate open, it will close a little with each bump or hard stop. The key is to secure it tightly (otherwise it'll bump up and down hitting the load) at the lowest position you can manage, and of course put some padding between your load and door.

Re: Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

Good way to tie down Liftgate.

You can use the Liftgate Bumper Stop, located at each side of the liftgate. Use thin nylon tie down rope and feed it through the small hole in the liftgate bumper stop.

Re: Can I Drive Without My Tailgate Shut?

ssgunner --- Yep - I have transported four pre-hung doors (32" wide doors) at once with the liftgate partially tied closed. If you are transporting bifold closet doors you can lay them on their sides and fit them between the front seats (on top of arm rest, but place a towel down on the arm rest to prevent scratches on the leather) and the liftgate will still close fully.
