Can Our Jeeps Be Hacked?

Read this interesting article this morning about hackers being able to take control of vehicles...with the possiblity of causing crashes and such:

Your car is a giant computer - and it can be hacked - Jun. 1, 2014

Some auto manufacturers have begun to firewall the entertainment system from the rest of the vehicles computer controls because of concerns with malware coming from malicious apps. So the question begs to be asked...can our Jeeps get hacked?

Re: Can Our Jeeps Be Hacked?

I asked this same question in this forum a year ago. It's still the same answer: technically yes, some functions could be hacked but highly unlikely. The most vulnerable aspects to be hacked are the remote opening and engine start-up.

I don't think our Jeeps have such high degree of integration that a rogue Pandora app would disable your brakes, stuck the throttle fully open and force steer the car. Besides steering is electrically assisted not fly by wire, though I would welcome the iHeart Radio app that would hack my HVAC colder.

Any computer can be hacked. Where there is a will, there is a way. These posts are probably being read by some govt agency as we type them Do a search on OBD-III.

Re: Can Our Jeeps Be Hacked?

Remember, there are members here begging for someone to hack the Uconnect system so they can bypass built in software safety protocols. And this is happening. If someone can make a buck, it'll happen. I'm sure there are plenty of people capable of hacking any of the systems in a vehicle, and they will once they figure out how to monetize it.

And let us not forget that big brother is also watching. You have a uconnect internet capable navigation and you never know when, mysteriously and unknown to you, your car will be tracked on someone's computer screen. And the car has a crash data recorder who will know what you've been doing prior to an accident. For all I know, maybe it even records cabin voice.

I think the NSA won't bother to try to read pig Latin. It requires too much effort.

And if you have SXM, the satellites know where you are in addition to the GPS data and cell network relay towers.

Re: Can Our Jeeps Be Hacked?

There are LOTS of ways the government is tracking these days...

Back in early 2000's it was revealed that for COLOR ink jet and laser toner based printers, the printers printed the smallest resolution (one printer pixel) dots on every page you printed in yellow...the info included the make, model, serial number of the printer and also date and time on some. No joke. I actually got a blue light with magnifier back then to see...and sure enough. The dot patterns were repeated about every 2" up the page and someone posted a decoder of the patterns. Basically, just print out a page with one word on it, then use a blue light to see the tiny yellow dots with a magnifying glass repeatedly printed on the page. I suppose you could just remove the yellow cartridge...but then you couldn't print in color. I think there was a lawsuit as it wasn't disclosed to the consumer. Printer makers (esp. Xerox) went mum on it. No joke. This was originally implemented to combat currency counterfeiting. All color copiers were scan and print (versus B&W light lens systems) so Canon (the first maker of really high quality color copiers...under $50K) had to install special software to detect currency during the scan process and shut down the machine.

Government Uses Color Laser Printer Technology to Track Documents | PCWorld

Printer steganography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Did you also know that EVERY mail piece is photographed (front and back) and optical reader reads all info and this is stored by the government. They can type in your name and see all mail you have gotten (and sent if you use return address). That's how they caught the ricin mailer a few years ago....some lady in TX. They reviewed the mail that was processed before and after to narrow down to exactly which mail drop box she used and about when based on investigating others who dropped mail in the box. It narrowed down the search to less than 100 possible suspects then with more info caught her within days (there were no fingerprints). All mail is sorted at the mega facilities now with this equipment.

For vehicles and cell phones, they are called roving bugs. They have used an operating backdoor to install software to listen in even though no indication on your phone other than the battery runs down quicker than usual.

Oh, and don't even start on all the license plate readers that are permanently installed (including vehicle mounted ones). Privacy is dead....especially when with a few clicks all the information is available and organized.

Tin foil hats won't protect anyone now!!! LOL LOL LOL

Yet flight 370 still can't be found...sad.
