Re: Can you believe these guys

Seriously...total tool bags. I owned one. It SUCKED. The whole experience, especially the $500 service bills every 10k miles. Corker was at the 20k, tire rotation was part of the service. Because, at the end of the day, I am an a-hole, I chalked the tires before dropping it off. Got it back, checked the chalk and it was exactly as and where I marked it. I called out the service manager, and the best he could come up with was "well, even though it is on your invoice, it is up to the tech whether or not they need rotating". It went downhill quickly from there.
I was picking up the Jeep last week at my local dealership. I cannot tell you how happy I am the service department does NOT know my name.

Yeah, there was a time when MB made a well built vehicle, but economies have forced them into more mundane mass production. MBs in Germany are like our Ferds in the US, a cheap transportation appliance. But I once saw a SL convertible flip at 120 mph, driver walked away with a couple bruises, just some scratched paint on the MB. Most of their models are solidly built and heavy. The MB factory seemed to never trust mere mortals working on their vehicles, however. The make repair documentation difficult or costly to come by and require endless special tools.... or a big hammer

There are quite a few MB enthusiasts that are not typical Rolex owners and the tips and support their forums supply are top rate. I owned an SLK for like 15 years and there are a lot of good eggs there. One guy there, for example, figured out how to rebuild the top hydraulics with about $100 in parts as an alternative to paying a dealer $5000 for the job.

The Grand Cherokee is a pretty solid machine. Chrysler is building them alot stronger nowadays, nearly 50% of the make up of the vehicle is high strength steel, pretty impressive. Also alot stronger than the previous GC.

Re: Can you believe these guys

I also traded out my ML350 for the JGC. The brakes on the ML suck! There is no feel at all! And it wasn't until the 2012 model that the genius engineers in Germany figured out that you should have a light on the headlight switch, because you usually need that switch when it gets dark....DUH!
And I love how they forgot that every ML is made here in Alabama. Not in Germany.
They'll talk about "stronger steel" and look over the 3 year dry rotted rubber everywhere.

Being made in Alabama is a selling point for me.

Why does the headlight switch need to be lighted? You just leave it in auto and it does all the work for you.

The fog lights and driving lights don't operate in the auto mode. You have to switch the headlight switch over to manual, then you can push the lever to turn on the fog lights. So, at night when your driving down the road, and hit fog or any conditions with which you need the additional lights, or to turn off your headlights and turn on the fog lights, Mercedes Benz decided you should do all this with out the benefit of any lighting whatsoever, And if you reach up to turn the over head light on to see, the steering column casts a huge shadow over the buttons to make sure you still can't see anything. Seriously, you just about have to pull over to switch the frickin lights around! I hated them. I had to learn the clicks and feel so I could do it in the dark by touch, when a simple backlit switch, as every other switch in the MB was, except the one you really need at night......Why?

That's where it went wrong. On the Jeep, the foglights come on with the headlights automatically.

I used to have an opinion about wrist watches - it was a luxury not to wear one. Now I have a Sony and can hang up on telemarketters without ever touching my phone. Maybe that's why I have a Heep.

Re: Can you believe these guys

What do you expect from guys who drive a bland soccer mom Mercedes SUV? Further, guys so obsessed with their bland soccer mom Mercedes SUV that they are on a message board to talk about it? I know some very successful guys that are into flashy Euro cars and they'd never ever consider purchasing an ML. The only guys I know with MLs were kids in college who were loaded and didn't treat it like a status symbol, it was just something their Mom prob drove for a year and then it was given to them.

The only SUVs I can understand owning AND being fanatical about are Grand Cherokee, Cayenne, Range Rover, maybe Q7, and maybe X5 and X6, and FX.

Re: Can you believe these guys

I bought the ML in '07 after a rather, shall we say, interesting relationship with a Range Rover. The only reason I bought it was the CDI engine. Fuel was approaching $5 a gallon and I was tired of getting 11 mpg with the RR gasser. I have stated this in past posts, the diesel engine got at least 25 mpg no matter what I was doing, highway or city. It was truly impressive. I did not even consider the WK diesel as I felt it was completely overpriced and the residuals were terrible. If I recall, the Overland diesel approached $46k and there were little to no rebates on them, where as the gas ones had up to $8k coming back between the front end and the trunk.
