Thanks for the compliment. Hope you find it as successful as I did.

New Grand Cherokee? - $40,000
Plastic screws for the bottom of the license plate frame? - $1.99
Getting rid off the damn rattle every time I close the hatch? - PRICELESS!

Bob.

Re: Can't have 4 screws for rear license plate??? Huh?

I ended up buying a cheap mounting bracket for under 5 bucks. The mount sits flush with the rear hatch. I used 3M double sided tape to secure the lower portion of the mount being I didn't want to drill any extra holes in the gate. The mount moves the plate out roughly 1/2 inch but the plate still sits perfectly vertical. With the small trim ring I have on the plate, everything matched up fine.

Yeah, I could have just stuck the plate to the rear liftgate, but didn't like the way it looked w/o using the mouting bracket. Made some calls yesterday to several dealers and none could produce a part number on the OEM plate bracket, so I chose to go this route. Worked like a charm. Needless to say, I feel better about plastic sitting against my liftgate versus a metal license plate.

Re: Can't have 4 screws for rear license plate??? Huh?

They key here is to use a sturdy metal frame. The metal frame when bolt from above, puts pressure down low and keeps it against the hatch and not rattle.

The issue I (and others) had is the license plate makes contact with the rubber bumpers mounted to the hatch but the metal frame does not. Without the extra fasteners on the bottom holding the frame tight against the plate, closing the hatch caused the frame to vibrate against the plate. Adding the extra fasteners on the bottom stops the vibrations.

Makes sense. To think about it, mine didn't even come with bumpers in those square recesses.

Got the $1.99 nylon bolts. Installed them in the Walmart lot. Cut the excess off with pocket knife. Scratched the paint with knife. Stopped a dealer on way home to buy touch up paint for $10. Total: $11.99. But I'm still .

Sorry AAAA. Sounds like you have my kind of luck. Every time I try to fix something small I break something bigger. Glad it worked for you.

Bob.

Wow! Now you have me intrigued. Feel free to PM me with the details. We can compare notes and see who creates the most “collateral damage”.

Hey everyone I put the Weathertech license plate clear cover on with just the top 2 screws and it works fine. http://www.weathertech.com/store/mvp...=324&Year=2011

Just don't over tighten the top screws. You get a slight vibration when closing the rear hatch but overall I'm happy about how just the top 2 screws holding it fine. A good thing about this cover also is you can hide the bottom opening with the caps.

The top two rubber screw screw pieces are supposedly part number 68087789AB for 85˘ each. I might order two and see toy with installing them.....

I still think there is a hole drilled into the body (sheet metal) from the factory. The rubber screw pieces you mention are just rubber covers that go over the plastic grommet pieces that have the hole in them. I assume the screw goes through that grommet and through the metal. Maybe your onto something. Maybe the plastic grommet pieces on the the top with the rubber cover on them can be placed on the bottom. Then maybe use real short screws that don't reach the metal?

Keep us posted.
