Re: Can't have 4 screws for rear license plate??? Huh?

Bought a ClearCover which doesn't require screws in the bottom 2 holes, but does have caps that cover where the screws would go. It holds tight and doesn't mar the paint.

I went with Lakin plate brackets. Screws at the top, double-sided tape at the bottom (can do all 4 screws on front bumper, but I opted for the tape). Cover secured in all 4 corners. No rattles and very neat fit.

Re: Can't have 4 screws for rear license plate??? Huh?

They do look neat...I'm thinking off buying a set for $300 for new slimline plates but that's almost $1k. Do they real give it a look or could you equally get away with buying the Kingpin covers and plate from Autobarn?
Cheers

Re: Can't have 4 screws for rear license plate??? Huh?

I have el-cheapo clear covers over my license plates. The top two holes in the cover and plate are screwed into the factory mounting holes. I have rubber washers on the back of the plate superglued over the plate mounting holes. This helps keep any part of the top of the plate from contacting paint.

The bottom two holes are used only to secure the cover to the plate. You can get stainless torx screws with blind nut studs and rubber washers specifically for this purpose from just about any auto supply store.

I also found some very soft plastic plugs (don't remember what they were off of) that I cut down a little. They slip perfectly and securely over the factory foam rubber bumper pads that are used in place of lower plate mounting holes. They contact the back of the plate and hold it in the natural angle the plate wants to take when mounted with the top holes. It's very secure, absolutely no plate movement or rattles and no part of the plate or cover makes contact with the paint.

Re: Can't have 4 screws for rear license plate??? Huh?

It's personal preference really. I figured if I was going to spend $60k on a car I didn't want scrimp on the final details. Don't mean to rag on anyone, but I think it looks really tacky when people drill new holes in their plates to fit them, or fit them crooked or hanging down low, or have those cheap covers with the metal clips that everyone seems to have in NSW for some reason. Yes, the Lakin brackets are expensive, but they are high quality and position your plates in the perfect position and they are really secure. They were fantastic to deal with for custom orders too when I had a matching bracket made up for my personalised boat trailer plate.
Ultimately it's your car, so do whatever works for you.

I'll checkout Autobarn and if they don't do the trick I'll cough up for some Lankins...As it stands, the dealer has just fixed in the top screws which rattle and probably not used the factory mounts.

I made sure the dealer didn't install plates on mine. I've seen some just use self-tapping screws into the metal on the door instead of the rubber grommets provided from the factory, and I wasn't risking that.

Re: Can't have 4 screws for rear license plate??? Huh?

Yeah I never checked that out. Amazing how you forget the small things when you've never bought a new car before....next time.
So taking off the plates and I wasn't disappointed...dealer self tapped into the bumpers and not the rubber factory holes. So bought Autobarn backing plates and covers and it needs some adjusting.
The only thing is the the self tapping screws for the front (dealers) don't seem to be a good fit so what's recommended to get a tight fit as there's no factory holes...what's behind the bumper for example is it just like 2mm of aluminum? Sorry not car savvy at all.

Re: Can't have 4 screws for rear license plate??? Huh?

Did the dealer not know what the factory holes look like, did he think it's cheaper to put extra holes in the tailgate than the cheapo license plate or just some sick dealer joke?

Can you buy bumper plugs to stop water getting in. Otherwise out comes the silicon gun I guess

Here's the front. Again failed to use the dimples but drilled above and they're not even level.

I'll add this experience to my buying checklist for next upgrade though.
