Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

I just can't see any logical reason for them making the capless filler in the first place. It's not that much of an inconvenience to have to unscrew a gas cap when fueling your car. At least not for me.

Maybe because one of the more common check engine lights is caused by loose or badly sealed gas caps? Maybe it has nothing to do with us. Maybe it's just a cost cutting measure by Chrysler since it reduces nuisance warranty visits to the dealer?

I prefer a cap, but I also drive my Jeep in very dusty conditions several times a year, so my use is not the norm.

I agree. It's a solution to a non existent problem.

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

Really, the solution to all fill-related issues is to not let people pump their own gas.

Pretty much any problem or gas station accident can be traced to customer error. Keep the civilians out of the mix and you don't need to re-invent the wheel...or gas cap.

Since when did gas pump attendants become rocket scientists, and non civilians? Drive by a gated, high priced subdivision. How many of the home owners do you think pump gas for a living?

Well, I'd guess since most gas stations are self service, most accidents are customer error.

Before self service, most accidents were employee error.

Once gas stations become completely automated, most accidents will be blamed on computer error.

You're kidding right? Those guys pumping the gas are dumber than dog s---. Do you think they care if they spill gas down the side of your car. I never let anyone pump gas in any of my vehicles. Never did, never will.

Is Jersey the only state where mortals can not put fingers on the gas pumps? and a qualified pump operator must pump your gas for you?

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

Even in NJ, I never let them near my car.

The fact is, any time there's a major accident involving fire or someone driving off with a pump still attached, it's nearly always at a self-serve station.

The fires seldom happen because one of the major causes is people getting into their cars while filling, then getting back out. That often causes a static charge build-up that can ignite fuel vapors. At one point, this was erroneously attributed to cell phone usage (the common tie was people often getting on their phones in the car), but this has been shown to be false in recent testing.

If you never leave your car, you never build up that charge. That's why some states require the locks be removed from pump handles.

Since the attendant doesn't return your card until the fill-up finishes, people are less likely to drive away with the pump handle attached. It sounds stupid, but it really does happen. These people walk among us.

Finally, people spill a lot of gas. Thousands of gallons land on the ground in front of pumps every year, especially when people top off and overfill tanks or spill while filling gas cans. Unless you get the worst attendant ever, they're less likely to spill anywhere close to that much.

The fact is, people don't pay attention to anything and it's become so easy to fill up, people don't take the transfer of volatile liquids seriously - even less seriously than the task of driving.

In the end, though, I like places that pump my gas for me because it's almost always cheaper. It doesn't bother me to pump it myself, though.

Really? I've never had any attendant spill gas down the side of my car. Ever.

I've never seen them do it to anyone else, either. I've seen plenty of toolboxes do it to their own cars, though.

In fact, there's a station I end up at a lot in Jersey where (if it's not too busy), the guy will clean my windshield while the gas pumps.

Obviously, like with any business, you can easily get people that suck at their jobs. That's any business. Heck, your doctor may have passed his license exam, but was he first in his class...or last?

Oregon, too.

So, you're equating income to intelligence?

Trust me, money can't buy you common sense. I've known plenty of well off people that lack it.

That might be because "nearly" all gas stations are self services. Statistically you would expect that.

I have nothing against full service stations. I put myself through college managing a Hess station, before self serve. There were 38 people employed there, about 50% full time. My people did clean windows, check oil, and if asked would even check the air in your tires. Of course, this was in NY where people tipped the attendants back then.
