Capless Gas Tank Stories

The dealer delivered my new Jeep with a full tank, so I haven't filled up yet. How are these things? Likes, dislikes? Can you "top off" easily? I'm one of those guys that's afraid of anything new. What was this supposed to fix? How aggravated am I going to get on my first trip to the gas station?

I'm looking at this whole thing as a solution to a non existent problem. What's the upside? I've never forgotten to put a gas cap on in my life.

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

Upside is that you don't have to screw/unscrew anything
Downside...and i only had this happening one time: After 2 weeks while she just sat in the driveway I went to fill the tank and I couldn't stick the damn thing into the hole! :P And trust me...the thing was hard!
Was raining outside and that stupid flip seal would not budge. After 5 min of struggling while telling the car she's not a virgin anymore and to stop acting up I managed to do what I was supposed to.
Never had the issue after.

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

No gas cap sealing issues either. That can cause check engine lights all the time on cars.

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

I've only had to fill up 3 times now, twice on a longer trip out of town.

No issues so far other than looking at the thing once and trying to remember what step I should be doing before closing the outside flap. Then I remembered that step is gone now, along with the cap.

Old habits die hard, I guess. I'm like the Pavlov's Dog of gas pumping...especially coming from having a locking gas cap.

The guy pumping my gas in New Jersey didn't seem to have any issues, either.

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

Not a fan of the cap less filler. Haven't had any issues, but it seems like it would be possible for water, etc to get in under certain conditions. For piece of mind I "installed" a nice plastic top off of a can of wasp spray - fits perfectly! I like to top offf too, and that's one thing you can't do with it.

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

Two years, and not a single problem. One tip, when the auto pump shuts off, stop. Don't overfill, it's not a contest. I believe this is even mentioned in the manual (a handy resource).

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

Neither my Jeep nor my Ford capless filler ever caused a problem. I don't drive in the Outback.

I never looked closely, but I wonder if some water gets through the first 'door' in the filler, will it get past the second one, or is there some kind of drain hole ahead of the second. I can't (or don't want to) believe the manufacturers didn't think about this. Plus, it seems there are more folks worrying about "what if's" without any evidence of a problem.

Time will tell.

Never had the issue after.

Happened to me once as well. Once the Jeep lost its virginity haven't had the issue since.

Also on another occasion I had an issue with a pump constantly shutting off on me even though the tank was almost bone dry empty. I got scared a bit because that was couple of hours from my house and no other gas station in sight. After 1/2 hour struggle I was able to trickle down enough gas to get me to the next station ... And to my surprise and relief no issue there. Not sure if it was a Jeep or a gas station/pump thing.

It's easy for gas to run out the top and spill all over the place because the pump won't automatically shut off. Taught me not to try to top it off anymore.

All of my owner's manuals advise not to top off as it can cause issues with the fuel vapor recovery system. We had a '06 Mini Cooper S that would stall repeatedly if you dared top off the gas, so it's really a good idea not to do it.

Re: Capless Gas Tank Stories

If you drive is dusty or dirty conditions, the fuel door will not keep that crud out. It's going to settle into any point it can, including the flapper of the capless filler. When you fill up, where will that crud go? Into the tank. Yes, there are fuel filters, but do they protect the in-tank pump?

Some people have indicated that there is no proof of any problem, but there is also no proof that the dirt in your tank will be harmless. That will be sorted by time and circumstance.

$0.25 of prevention for a problem that might not exist or $800 in possible non-warranty repairs for a problem that might exist? Choose to lose $0.25 now and avoid a possible $800 loss later or save $0.25 now and choose to possibly lose $800 later.

And, yes, I pulled that $800 number out of my hat. I don't actually know what it costs to replace an in-tank fuel pump, but I don't imagine it's cheap.

I put up pictures of how much dust/dirt can make it past the fuel door on my 2015 Ecodiesel. Direct link to my pictures below.

Fix for capless filler
