Car theft ring

High-tech thieves: Crooks using computers to steal cars | khou.com

HOUSTON – Cars are disappearing across Houston and for the first time, police are getting a look at the high-tech way thieves are breaking in.

"They were very professional, kind of made you feel kinda like you've been invaded," said David Payne, who had a Jeep stolen from his home in Hyde Park.

When this dad looked back at his home security cameras, he realized how his daughter's red Jeep disappeared.

"There must be something going on. You can see the guy walk up with the computer and pop the door," said Payne.

In the video there are two men. The first walks up and lifts the hood, appearing to cut off the alarm. Ten minutes later, a second man hops inside, fumbles around on a laptop, then backs the Jeep right out of the driveway.
"Around 1 a.m., someone came and drove off with my truck," said Charles Shade, who had his Dodge Ram stolen from his home in Oak Forest.

"They are either scanning it from the dash or they've got dealer technology and they are coming in," said Shade.

Police say they've seen later model Jeeps, Grand Cherokees and Dodge Rams targeted across the city.

"It's everywhere. If you've got a group that knows how to steal a certain model vehicle, that's what they are going to go after consistently and steal," said Jim Woods with the Houston Police Department's Auto Theft Unit.

Does anyone know any information to stop this from happening?

A few months ago they were hacking the cherokee to take control of them while driving them. Now they are hacking them to steal them. Maybe time for FCA to hire some better security engineers.

I hope they steal mine and it kills them later on when they don't know how to put it in park.

Re: Car theft ring

saw this on the 60 minutes or another show like that a few weeks ago. All vehicles will kfobs are being broken into now. What they do is put a device somewhere on your car that intercepts the code when you press your kfob to access or remote start the car. They come back, retrieve the device they put on your car, plug it into the laptop and they have the keyfob codes. This allows them to unlock, start and do whatever they want with your car.

They said the technology works with pretty much all key fobs ever made lol.

Yeah, but shame on him anyway.

Those thieves must have stones the size of Stonehenge unless that particular area of Texas has a lack of firearms.

I wonder if the stolen units lack the Uconnect update that allegedly blocks air network access. Unless what they are really doing is connecting a laptop under the hood in which case all bets are off that don't involve Colt or Smith & Wesson

That, I would believe. And with trivial access to DMV records, they'd have your address and could just wait until the vehicle is unattended.

Re: Car theft ring

I'm leasing my GC and it has GAP insurance so I don't care if they steal it or if the thing implodes or if the vehicle continues to have recalls. I just won't be able to get out of this vehicle early probably.

Hmmm, and just how did they open the hood. And if you say they already had the Key Fob code, then why disable the alarm? And, according the the article where they "took control" of a Jeep, it took them a couple of hours to gain that control. So, since the Jeep will not start unless it detects the Key Fob, how did they take it within a couple of minutes?

Re: Car theft ring

I've seen youtube videos where they have some kind of electronic device that extends the range of the thingamajiggy in the jeep that talks to the keyfob.

So the fob is still is your house, but the jeep on the driveway 'thinks' the fob is next to the vehicle, then they get in, and start it and drive away. Not sure how they would start it again when out of range of the fob.
