Car wash conveyor belt

I tried searching the forum for this. My apologies if this has been asked before.

I have been using a local automated car wash. It has a steel mesh conveyor belt which you drive on to, you then place your vehicle in neutral and enjoy the show.

The slight concern that I have is that when driving onto or off the conveyor belt. There is a periof of time when one end of the vehicle is stationary on the moving belt, while the other end is moving. I get some grinding and hesitation during this. I am assuming this is all ok and managed efffectively with no harm being done.

Thank you,
Oscar

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

I honestly have never noticed any noise at that point in "the journey". Of course, that's also where the big-butt blowers are located, meaning I can't hear a thing at all. I'm due for a wash, so I'm going to try and observe more closely, but it seems to me that being in neutral, there shouldn't be a whole lot of issue here.

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

There is no issue when completely on the belt and in neutral. The issue is when I am entering onto the belt. As I move forward, the front wheels hit the belt and stop moving, while the rear wheels are not on the belt. This is where I get a bit of a shudder and hestiation. I am very new to this all wheel drive stuff.

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

Just built up the courage to take mine (was scared of scratching the rims) on one the other day. The one I went to had plastic on the rails.

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

I am in neutral before the conveyor hits my tires on the ones I go to.

Don't think it would harm anything though.

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

It sounds like the conveyor system at this carwash is a little different than typical carwashes.

You say the front wheel hits the conveyor and stops moving. Is the conveyor like a moving walkway type deal? Every car wash I have ever used has a metal track, and then a wheel that pops up and pushes the car along the track, so the ground underneath the wheels is not moving, the wheels are rolling along the track...

Does that make sense?

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

SW03ES brings up a good point...the car wash I use (and as far as I know, all that I have ever used) do not stop the vehicle wheels from turning and are configured as SW03ES describes...

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

I can see how if you pulled onto a moving conveyor and the front wheels stopped while the rear wheels kept turning, or there was a differential in that rate of rotation between the front and rear it could piss off the AWD/stability systems.

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

Flip it to neutral and glide onto the ramp before breaking, instead of driving on, then switching to neutral. As others have said, its the all-time wheel system getting pissed the wheels aren't moving at the same time. If you are in neutral you should avoid this.

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

You could also flip it into Sport mode, which should disable the front/rear torque distribution logic.

Re: Car wash conveyor belt

SW03ES, yes it is a massive moving walkway like used at airports for pedestrians.

Jamesla30, you have to drive up hill to get onto the belt.

avalys, good idea, I will give this a try and let you know how it works out.
