Re: Carmax Appraisal

this is funny as I just sold my wifes audi a7 premium plus sport to CarMax this Saturday. I got 46500. Retail was $52k+ I did have maint. records, audi care and remainder of 4/48k warranty. Audi dealer offered me $44k and I had several offers on ebay of $46k. This is a rare car around these parts...but I feel I did well.

Re: Carmax Appraisal

I would suspect a smart company like carmax collects a lot of data and uses that as part of the price. Something like the A7 might have had some flag like that if thefe is demand. Just like the stealer they are in biz to make money so they must feel they can do that.

Yep.....Autotrader.com all the way.

Re: Carmax Appraisal

Is there a thread or a reliable website on how to sell a car yourself?

I have never sold a vehicle on my own which of course leads to a ton of questions. Such as, do they pay with cash in a briefcase or should they drop it at a location of my choosing ensuring that they werent followed? (joking of course).

There may be some...

Depending on where you live, suggest only meeting prospective buyers at a police station or sheriff dept parking lot.

Never ever allow a buyer to drive your vehicle by themselves, and if you with them, consider a CCW.

The title doesn't move until the check clears, and make sure if you owe any money the lien holder agrees with any sale.

I sold mine through AutoTrader.com (have sold 6+ cars/Jeeps through them).

Always got a bank cashier's check....which I called the bank to verify it is legit. And a simple online sales form and copy of the buyer's driver's license. AutoTrader has a screening feature ... and it works. I ONLY got legit calls and emails. Total cost for the top of the line AutoTrader package was under $200.

The guy that bought my 2011 Summit didn't even test drive it. He came and looked at it. Said he'd buy it and would be back in two days with the cashier's check or cash if I preferred. I said cashier's check. Simple ,easy but I was also prepared and had done it just three years earlier. First time he drove it was on his way to leave.

Re: Carmax Appraisal

One other tip. See if a local car dealer, used or otherwise, can help with the DMV transfer papers.. and don't rely on the buyer sending them in, because you can be liable for a hit and run if the vehicle is still in your name with the DMV.

Re: Carmax Appraisal

Just got my '12 appraised by Carmax for $28k. 38k miles, very clean with the only defect being a small scratch through the paint on the rear quarterpanel.

Edmunds values the car at $28,900 and KBB at $29,400, but those are just theoretical prices. I'm going to start contacting dealers to see if they can get me closer to KBB numbers.

I thought long and hard about selling privately as I own the car outright but in the end I didn't want to deal with flaky/shady buyers, spending hours on the phone and arranging test drives, etc.

Don't just consider those numbers as theoretical. As I previously wrote, I get these numbers from my local dealers on trade ins.

Re: Carmax Appraisal

Right, but it's still theoretical unless and until you get an offer in writing or a check being handed to you.

"What's my XYZ Widget worth?" Whatever you can get someone to actually pay you. In the end no valuation estimate matters if you can't find a buyer at that price.

Re: Carmax Appraisal

Rum, be sure to consider any sales tax impact on trading vs selling elsewhere. Here in PA, if a dealer came close to those Carmax and KBB numbers you posted, it may be worth trading as the value of the trade comes off before sales tax is calculated on the new vehicle. I don't know how it works in California, however...
