Re: Carmax Appraisal

California loves your tax $$ so here we have to pay sales tax on the full cost regardless of trade-in. But that is a good point of consideration for those of you who can take advantage of something like that.

Re: Carmax Appraisal

Ive been doing homework to try and figure out what my exact vehicle is going for. The closest ive found on Carmax (link below) has 9k more miles than mine has and doesnt have a trailer hitch (mine does). I also have the extended warranty good for 6 years/60,000 miles. Carmax is asking 34,998 for their vehicle.

I have roughly 34k left in payments. I feel like a dealership should be able to get fairly close to that number if it was contingent on me purchasing my next vehicle through them.

What? Didn't you "just" tell all of us about buying the Audi? I thought you liked it. What is Tina driving now?

Re: Carmax Appraisal

The CarMax number is a decent trade number. If you trade at a dealer and ask for more than trade value they will just try and shift the money elsewhere... such as higher selling price. They have a profit margin to stick to... six of one kind half a dozen of another.
My 2 cents... the car is "new" and trouble free. sell it yourself and see if you can get at least the payoff amount.

That is why I insist that there are per se two transactions when dealing. The trade numbers are not intertwined with the purchase numbers. This way I know exactly what the trade is giving me as well as the price of the new vehicle. After purchasing almost 50 vehicles in my lifetime, I know all of the gimmicks the dealers try to pull.

Can you write a thread on how to correctly do this? I would really appreciate it.

Exactly.
I've bought a lot of cars.

I never will believe that a trade in scenario beats the money you save by selling a perfectly good vehicle on your own... assuming you know what you are doing.

In Florida, the top of the title is perforated with the form you can use to turn into the DMV or any tag office where they enter in that the car is sold and you are no longer liable...no need to depend on the buyer registering etc.

I would take this one step further and just negotiate the price with any trade-in. For example, "I will pay $XX for that Cali-Platinum Oversummit with my POS Sube-maro as a trade-in." You just have to decide beforehand what you are willing to let your trade-in go for and subtract that from what you are willing to pay for the new vehicle.

Even further, do the research on invoice, hold-back, rebates, TTL, doc fees, etc... and approach the dealer with an "out the door" offer. This really takes away a lot of the tactics sometimes employed by dealers to "trick" you into spending more than you want. I haven't bought 50 vehicles (wow!) like jeepgrady, but have bought the last 6 this way and it really has improved my buying experience.

What is the best resource for this info. Any sites for hold back info?

Not that I could find. Hold-back is like what invoice used to be... a secret held close by the dealer.

I found an article (Motor Trend?) that estimated the hold-back on my Laredo was ~$1100.

I don't believe dealer's will negotiate on hold-back unless there are unusual circumstances, like having an oddly optioned vehicle that has been sitting in their backlot for 3 months... covered in dust...
