That's why Toyota/Lexus is going to be paying out millions.

According to biz rags, the recalls don't seem to have had much effect on any company's sales figures, other than possibly a bit upward.

At least they aren't cynical enough to have offered a wiener and marshmallow kit for the Ford Pinto...

Re: Carwash Conundrum

The millions that they will payout will make up for the sales loss which did occur during the time that the story was its hottest and in the news regularly.

The millions would be chump change, say a mere footnote in an advertising budget.
Counterintuitively, people hear "Toyota paying millions" and only remember "Toyota" portion of that.

All Toyota/ Lexus same thing, people remember more then you think especially when they're visiting their family members who were killed in those crashes because of negligence by that company.

Re: Carwash Conundrum

After the car wash do you take it home and spray it with any detailing polish or do anything else to it?

Out of all the families that own Toyotas, how many fall into the category you describe?

Even with all the publicity, GM sales continue to rise.

That's nice but they haven't finished the scope of the GM investigation.

The rest of the investigation is more about pointing fingers than anything else. But it seems most people don't care. They were discussing the situation on a news show recently. They said that even after GM notified customers that they would give them a loaner if they felt uncomfortable driving their vehicles, very few responded.

Even though it is a big deal, only a very small percentage of owners actually had their cars stop. If it didn't happen to me yet, I guess I'm safe, seems to be the attitude.

It's the same with the Jeep booster recall. A few people made a big fuss about getting it done right away ... That was the noise. The majority will get it done whenever.

I asked my service rep last week if anybody was giving them a hard time for not having the parts. He said one the day it was announced, and one other who wanted it done the day they got the letter. One thing about the dealer is that they are up front. I didn't mention the recall. They brought it up, even though they didn't have the part, just to be sure I was aware of it. They did do one while I was there. The woman drove away without hitting anything, so I guess they did ok.

This is not really accurate.

Remember that I owned a Lexus that was involved in the issue, a 2010 ES350, and I post on the biggest Lexus forum on the internet, as you can imagine this was a BIG topic. The "sticking" involved top hinged pedals (only less expensive Lexus models have top hinged pedals, on the better cars they are floor hinged) and all Toyotas really) sticking in a groove on the optional winter mats, when they were installed improperly (i.e. not secured, on top of other mats, the wrong mats for the car). Here is an image of the pedal stuck into the mat in such a way:

Here's another in a car that was involved in an accident:

To remedy this they redesigned the mats (the new mats suck, and people were PISSED because if the dealer saw your old mats in the car they would confiscate them and refuse to return them), and they notched the bottom edges of the gas pedal...in one of the dumbest "fixes" I've ever seen:

They also released a firmware update that addressed the issues found in the NASA report, and added a brake/gas override where when the brake and gas were applied at the same time throttle was aborted.

Personally this is one of the many reasons I prefer floor hinged pedals such as what is in my GS:
