Re: Caught On Fire

If my jeep ever catches fire, I'm not calling anyone until it's fully engulfed. Then I'm calling the fire dept. Followed by my insurance agent.

Re: Caught On Fire

Wow this is scary, I had the repair done a few months ago, dealer did when I brought it in for a trans update, I never requested for them to do the visor repair they did it without me asking. Seeing that a fire can still occur after the repair has been done has me concerned. My jeep is parked in my attached garage that sits under my 2 year olds bedroom. If this things catch's fire in the middle of the night it could be deadly.

Re: Caught On Fire

Like anything else, a repair is only as good as the person making it.

What bothers me more is did having the repair actually prompt it to happen when it may not have otherwise? the key seems to be going in and messing with it whether it be for the recall or other. likely a very small percentage that this happens to but no one wants to be that small percentage especially if the jeep happens to be in a garage instead of outside. I would hope that jeep corporate is all over these ones that are going up in flames after the repair.

Re: Caught On Fire

An alternative might be to simply tell the service tech to disconnect the vanity mirror wiring. At least that would give some peace of mind about it.

Re: Caught On Fire

what I wonder about this is why aren't these shorted wires blowing a fuse, that's why fuses are there is to prevent things just like this from happening? too small a gauge wire being used so the wire burns up instead of the fuse, to large a fuse. Seems like two issues here to me 1. a wire is getting pinched and 2. wires are going up in flames instead of tripping a fuse. im sure there is probably reason but I have not seen any specifics on it.

I was pondering that as well, but then I saw the recall text said the cause was a high resistance short rather than a low resistance short which would be more likely to blow a fuse. All of this is I^2*R, but if the short is in a smaller region then the power flux through that tiny region could be sufficient to boost temps to ignition.

Re: Caught On Fire

The visor lights would not draw much but you got the sunroof wires and the rain sensing block up there, what else could be up there?

Re: Caught On Fire

Well, the WK2 was towed to the dealer. She opened a complaint with Chrysler and they called the dealer and told them not to touch the vehicle until they could look at it. Sounds like they want to investigate what happened.

Damn straight they should!

And about the fire extinguisher, you did the right thing. Maybe ultimately you preserved evidence that could prevent another fire and / or injury. So cheers..

I once emptied a powder FE into the bottom of my snowthrower because the drive disc was literally on fire.. Regretted it due to the mess, but it still clears my driveway 6 years later. Gotta do whatcha gotta do.

I did learn though, if you actually think you might use a FE you buy, think about what's in it!

Lucky you - mine is parked in the garage so when it's fully engulfed, I might have to replace more than just the Jeep...
