CEO Quoted - 7 or 8 Speed Transmission in the 2012 WK2?

So in a conversation with Forbes and the CEO of Chrysler and Fiat,Sergio Marchionne, he mentioned something about the "transmission going in that car next year didn't exist". I've included the link and section of text below.

This begs the question, is he referring to the 7/8 speed auto going into the WK2 in 2012, the next model year, or the trans going in the WK2 actually in 2012 as a 2013 model year. I find it hard to believe they would only have a one model year transmission but maybe it wasn't ready and they needed to go to market so they just moved forward with the 5 speed? Ford did the same thing with the GT500 engine in 2010.

Anybody have any thoughts or insight? Seriously considering a 2011 Jeep GC in Mineral Gray or Blackberry with the light tan interior but may hold out till July of this year to see if the 2012 will have the new transmission. I'd just feel sick if I bought the 2011 5 speed and then the 7/8 speed came out the following year. I know stuff like this inevitably happens, but I was really hoping for the new transmission.

http://blogs.forbes.com/joannmuller/...io-marchionne/

Forbes: So whatís this about building a Maserati based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee? Why do that?
Why? For the same reason that Porsche sold the Cayenne. I donít know why Porsche can do it and we canít do it. Look, that Grand Cherokee platform that we have deserves a Ferrari engine. Itís that good of an architecture.
Forbes: Dieter Zetsche (ceo of Daimler) says thatís because itís really a Mercedes platform (dating back to the DaimlerChrysler merger)
You know what, if I called the head of product development here and you told him that it was a Mercedes he would just kill you. Iíll tell you why, because it started off as a Mercedes platform. Dieter left here in 2006. That architecture wasnít industrialized until 2009. In three years in this business, the world changes. The engine thatís in that car (Chryslerís new Pentastar V6) didnít even exist. The transmission thatís going into that car next year didnít exist. All the suspensions were redone, all the work on the inside was redone, everything. This is nonsense.

Nice catch! Not really a secret anymore though

"The transmission that’s going into that car next year didn’t exist" is the line I like

Re: CEO Quoted - 7 or 8 Speed Transmission in the 2012 WK2?

Trying to divine which transmission will go into the 2012 GC has been like Ray Charles trying to find a toothpick on a Manhattan sidewalk in a thick fog.

So far it looks like calendar year 2012, or MY 2013, and the Forbes interview doesn't contradict this. Pass the white cane, but I hope I'm wrong.

That's what I'm thinking too, though I hope not because I don't want to wait that long. I would think that if it was for MY12 then he would have said "for the 2012" and not "next year". It's all wild speculation and we won't know for sure until July when the order guide is out or someone leaks it early.

The only hopeful saving grace is the SRT8 coming out as a 2012 MY. I would find it hard to believe they'd pair it with that and not release it to the other Hemi. There has just been too much press and leaked info around the SRT8 for it to be a 2013 MY which means we wouldn't see it in production next year.

I'm going to wait till April and hope someone leaks the 2012 ordering guide.

I like that line to. Right now we have the 2011 GC, so next year could mean the 2012 GC. Or, by next year he could be referring to 2012 which means a 2013 GC.
I guess, only time will tell. But I got my fingers crossed for MY2012 sporting the 8-speed.

ah, then we speak about the 2013 Model (next year). Maybe the SRT with the new one? Time will tell ;-)

2013 model year for the WK 8-spd. No 7-spd in the works. 9-sp for FWD models coming after that.

Both of the 5-speed transmissions used in the WK2 have been around for many many years so it was easy to incorporate them into the WK2, if even for a couple of model years. The contract with ZF was signed just 7 months ago, well after the 2011 models were "locked up". It will be awhile yet before Chrysler starts building them (2013). Ahead of that they will source some from ZF so that they can start phasing them into their vehicles over the next few model years. The 8-sp will debut in 2012 V6 models of the 300 and the Charger.

The 2012 SRT8 will have the 5-speed.

Re: CEO Quoted - 7 or 8 Speed Transmission in the 2012 WK2?

Well...
For HEMI, why we need 7 or 8 speed instead of standard 5-speed?
To have better 0 to 100 performance?
To go at 250Km/hour?
For better mileage?
Or just for fashion?
The standard 5-speed may be is old, but reliable.
The new gearbox will be “question-mark”...

If we need dragster we will not buy the CG
If we need better mileage we will go to small engine (like Fiat 500)

Or may be am wrong?

Re: CEO Quoted - 7 or 8 Speed Transmission in the 2012 WK2?

Thanks Milous! Youíre information, paired with the CEOís words, and the MotorTrend article are now three sources pointing to the 2013 MY refresh for the new transmission. It always nice to have more than one source to try and ďvalidateĒ early information.

I still wish you three were wrong though! J Even though I know that wonít happen. Waiting for the 8-speed means waiting a year and a half for it to be built in 2012. Not sure if I want to wait that long. I have a fully loaded and mint condition 2005 F150 Lariat SuperCrew 4x4 that Iíve had since new (6 years now). Iím ready for a change, though I wish it came with better acceleration and gas mileage then my truckÖwhich it doesnít at this point. At least it has more creature comforts though, like the heated steering wheel, ability for more in-vehicle storage as opposed to the bed which is often dirty, auto closing tailgate and a huge sunroof. Other than that I already have all the other features incorporated into the truck (Nav, HID, heated seats, etcÖ)

The only thing that has me nervous is the vibration/shudder that several on the site seem to be experiencing with the Hemi. The Hemi I test drove also seemed to shift pretty hard. The new transmission would be nice to have for the extra 2-3 MPG and improved acceleration, but not sure those are big enough differentiators to make me wait 1.5 years. Just enough to make me feel bad in 1.5 years.

I will take that one! Fiat does own part of Ferrari.

That the WK2 chassis is being used for a Mercedes and with talk of it also being used for a Maserati, it speaks well of the inherent quality and robust design. We should feel fortunate and hopeful that the current engineering foresight continues.

Damn! That is sad to hear. Will we at least get the power folding mirrors for 2012?
