ZF makes good stuff, but there's NOTHING wrong with the W5A580 transmission for the 3.6 V6 and a powertrain engineer friend of mine once referred to it as a "bulletproof" design. I'm unsure about the 54RFE given that the even the SRT8 6.1 used the W5A580 instead of the 54RFE. Maybe they'll make the 8spd an option at first to help deplete the 5spd units before making the 8spd standard? That would be good marketing, IMHO.
Performance, mileage and reliability issues aside, how long will parts be available for the 5-speed that's heading into the sunset? For those who hold their vehicle for a decade or more, this can be a concern.

I say: The 8-sp is NOT scheduled to go into ANY 2011 model year vehicles. Remember, the contract with ZF was only signed about 4 months ago, well after 2011 models were buttoned up.

Introducing a major new part such as a transmission requires lots of advance time for custom tooling, crash testing, EPA certification, re-engineering etc.

A long, long time probably longer than you'd care to keep your truck, IMHO. The W5A580 is a popular, widely applied transmission kind of like the ancient GM TH400 units 35yrs ago and I can still get plenty of parts for those today.

Excellent point. I hadn't even considered that fact!

Your word is golden, which makes these press reports all the stranger. But didn't you also indicate awhile back that the 2012 GC would have the 8-speed, or am I thinking about the Jeep engineers' chat? Now it's 2013 and counting, which may be inevitable but certainly is a bummer.

Early indications were that the 8-sp would make it into the 2012 GC, recent info leans towards a later introduction. It's *possible* that the 2012 GC will offer a dual clutch 6-speed for 2012 and then the 8-speed for 2013/2014. I should have some more solid info on the 2012 models once things are finalized in the next few months.

In a recent interview, Marchionne clearly stated that the 8-speed transmissions would go into vehicles "next summer", which means 2012 models. But it will be slowly integrated into selected models across several model years.

Let us know in the coming months on this, thanks for the info.

You've obviously never sideswiped a gate or tree or something along those lines. Those crappy pieces of plastic are a godsend in that case.

Just sayin'

I have. It happens to the best of us. Go to dealer, get new plastic, Jeep is good as new.

^^^^^obviously...LOL. Do you know how much those little pieces of shit plastic cost? If they cost anywhere near what the WH plastic flares cost...it would be cheaper to get body work done.....

Not sure. Good question. When I had to replace one on my KJ, it was somewhere around $75ish.

I have never had a problem getting replacement parts for 20+ year old vehicle projects I have worked on. Maybe not oem replacements but if you know where to buy the quality is identical. I would not worry about parts availability. Especially only 10 years down the line. If you are worried buy the lifetime powertrain then when the 5 speed dies they will have to replace it with something and if there are no parts then maybe they will pop in the 8speed.

Re: Changes for 2012

I wouldn't worry about the 2012. You have one of the hottest SUV's out right now! People are trading in new Land Rovers, BMW's and such for that truck. That says something IMO!!!!
