Depends. Until fairly recently I could get oem parts for nearly anything on our 74 Benz; now, I can't even get an oem replacement muffler. A few years back when there was a roof leak on our 94 GC, I couldn't get an oem headliner, and since then some other oem parts have become unavailable, as well. Sure, there are always ways to skin the cat with aftermarket parts, Jerry-rigged parts and stuff from the junkyard, but nothing except performance parts beats oem for fit and reliability. For example, aftermarket mufflers for our '74 turn the nice exhaust note into a child's fart.

Going OT, but major components that are shared in high volume across multiple platforms and even across manufacturers, like transmissions, will have a very long support life compared to trim or mufflers/exhausts that may be unique to a specific model in a specific year; it's an aspect of lifetime production volume.

Re: Changes for 2012

I understand Scott's comment about the plastic wells and trim on the underbody, particularly for the street oriented rig looking to go monochromatic. Would guess the 2012 SRT8 will lose those liners for the same reasons.

That said, for everyday mixed use, and certainly for light AT, those plastic liners are solid utility and I actually like the look. For HD trail users they would get swapped for rock rails. YMMV.

That would require sheet metal changes and I really don't think they're gonna go through the trouble.

Re: Changes for 2012

I was reading another post about the V6 not having enough power off the line and in the passing range... an 8-Speed box should impove that,
but if Jeep doesn't offer the 8-Speed for 2012, I think I will pony up some extra coin and go with an X5 diesel.

If your biggest obstacle while driving will be a speed bump at the mall, that is not a bad choice! I don't know, but I would guess that guys on this forum are a little more likely to take their Jeep off-road than your average buyer, severely limiting our choices....

It would just be the fenders and rear quarter if ya think about it.....LOL> I can only hope....

And the small flares for the WK/WH are $1200 for those pieces. I hope the WK2's arent those prices

I'm waiting until Feb. or March. No firm announcement about a new tranny and I'm dropping my 45k on new X3 turbo or VW Touareg . I need a vehicle that can get out of it's own way on the two lane highways in the Montana mountains.

You can sit there and hope all you want, ain't gonna happen.

They'll be more along the lines of the prices I paid for my KJ flares. And wait, what the heck are you talking about anyway? Those aftermarket flares? That doesn't count. (And I'll agree with you, those are fugly pieces of garbage)
