Bollocks - for the person who asked, is a British/Aussie slang term for "Bullshit" lol

I know this a Jeep forum, but could you please show me where in the rules of this forum (or any other forum) that states you cant mention or reference another brand, especially if it proves a point of conjecture?

Yes, this particular image is from the MB page, however MB do not make the trans, ZF does, the very same manufacturer that makes our current 8spd (and now 9spd for the Cherokee). Now im not usually a gambler, but im willing to bet that the Grand Cherokee WILL get the 9spd sometime soon. Granted probably not with the MY15, but I expect it will in the 2016/2017 model update (WL I believe some people call it?)

As another poster suggested, marketing will win out on practicality. Much like a movie one liner...... build it and they will come (and buy it).

We will see development of gearboxes improve, and the number of gears unlimited. Look at the double clutch gearboxes that the germans have developed. They will become the norm, and cars will have more gears and shifting speeds will become almost instantaneous.

2015s cannot be ordered yet (although a dealer can still take a deposit and put you on a list). Final color selection and option packages are still being worked on, although will be very similar to current models.

Re: Changes for 2015?

I predict that 2015 SRT will have ACC with Stop, compared to the current ACC until 30km/h.

Unless the Grand Cherokee sheds 1500 lbs and gets a smaller engine producing less torque, is not going to happen. And that aside, where would the gains be over the existing 8 speed ? You could certainly argue that all of Chrysler's small cars and minivans and smaller SUVs will receive the 9 speed but not the larger applications (the RAMs, the GCs, the Wranglers, the Durangos, the vans, etc).

I hear ya on the weight & torque issues, but that's what they said about the 8spd too. The only gains would be possible better fuel economy from a higher gear set, and as mentioned, the marketing power of it. Hey come buy my Chrysler product because it has a 9spd auto that Ford or GMC don't!

We don't get many smaller Chrysler cars here in Aus, so i'm not familiar with them at all, same for Ram, Durango. We do have the Wrangler which should handle the 9spd no problem from what I can tell (if only by their size compared to GC).

We are talking one 9 speed (the zf designed for fwd cars trans) and you are I'm guessing taking about the Mercedes version for rwd cars.
The wrangler weighs around the same as the grand cherokee and has the same V6 engine, so the demands on it would be the same.
Adding another overdrive wouldn't benifit you very much because the 8 speed with the v6 stuggles to hold 8th gear when driving up inclines at 70 mph. The 9 speed in the cherokee isn't hitting 9th gear until 75 plus mph according to a lot of owners. The other side of the coin is efficiency, the article you posted says the 9 speed is 90% efficient, the 8 speed transmissions chrysler uses is 95% efficient, so how much are you really going to gain?
A lot of people who are given the option of the old 5 speed or the new 8 speed in the Ram's are choosing to go with the old transmission for many reasons, whether it be the fact it is new so questionable reliability, or they don't like the shifter, or they don't like it shifting all of the time. That last one is a big one, until they can convince the masses that more is better the marketing will not be as big as you think.

Wow, two answers in one day...thanks mate

Fishing: given that lane departure warning (or something similar) is stated in the manual, is it then safe to say that it would be included. Digital radio & apps like pandora for the Oz market wouldn't go astray either

Yes it appears we are talking about 2 versions of the ZF built 9spd. You seem to have a better knowledge of the Chrysler version than I do, but the original point of my MB link was to highlight that the 9spd built by ZF CAN suit a RWD/AWD GC. I concede that Chrysler MAY have to modify it (or get ZF to do so) to suit the GC weight/torque issues, but history shows it can be done, as it did with the 8spd, which they also said couldn't cope with the torque of the GC (to be clear my research was focused on the SRT with the 6.4 Hemi, so much more torque than the V6).

As for opting for the 5spd in the Ram, why would you choose to go backwards? I understand some folks don't like progress, or some are afraid of new technology and that's great for the used car market. As I said we don't have the Ram here in Aust, but I would expect you cant buy a new Ram in the US with a 5spd anymore?
