Agreed. It might also be worth noting that if you tighten them to different specs you chance warping the brake rotors. Personally, I'm going to stick to 95 ft/lb as printed in the owners manual. Thanks for the info, 'mandm1'.

I wanted to bump this. I changed to winter wheels on Saturday, and I could not believe how loose my lug nuts were when taking off the stock wheels. CHECK YOURS!!!!

Re: Check your lug nuts!

I thought I remembered reading something in my manual about checking the lug nuts after putting like 200-300 miles on the truck... I might be dreaming though. I'm assuming it'd be the same info for the Jeep.

Dang. Wish I'd known this prior to last Friday. I had my Jeep in for a replacement 20" wheel and would have had them inspect them all while it was up on the lift. Good reminder, rdalcanto.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

Checked lugs and tire pressure the day we picked her up, I guess we had a good dealer prep....tire pressure 36 lbs. + or - .2 and lugs @ 100 ft. lbs. Rechecked @ 700 miles, torqued to 100ft. lbs., they had stretched some, tire pressure was still good.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

Unless something changed in the past years, the toque-spec on a wheel lock package is simply the rated torque for the wheel locks. Following the owners manual is a good prescription. Don't over-tighten wheel nuts on alloy wheels or you risk damaging the wheel.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

My tire pressure was high and lug nuts loose at 3500 miles.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

I think this reflects on the dealer more than anyone else. That is part of the prepping process.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

They probably need to be re-torqued no matter what after the first few hundred miles.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

I was in a 7-11 parking lot a few years ago next and a tire came flying through the parking lot bouncing at least 10 feet high.......it flew off the right front of a car (needless to say the ca skidded pretty loudly) and traversed the parking lot going deep into a field. It could have easily killed someone but the parking lot wasn't crowded...it missed people, gas pumps, cars and the store....fortunately it didn't hit me. Ever since then, I check my tires much more often since I don't want that happening to me!

Re: Check your lug nuts!

Speaking from a place of experience ( I had a Ford Explorer that twice turned into a three wheeler. I rotated my wheels at a buddies garage using his impact gun. I didn't realize his compressor was dying and not making over 60 psi tops. I thought I tightened the lugs with the gun and headed on my way. About a mile away my driver side front tire didn't see the light turn red and ran the stop light as the rest of the truck tried to do a headstand. Second time was at 70 mph and a c clip let loose in the rear...real handful)
Now I always use a torque wrench, NOT an impact gun or my tricep pushing on a breaker bar.
