Re: Check your lug nuts!

Bump for a good reminder as the snow started to fly here this week and I know it is almost time for the winter tread.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

Very good idea. Every time I have bought new wheels I have had to re torque them.

2012 full manual (p. 562) says 110 ft lbs. Go figure, as the wheels are the same as 2011.

The revised 2011 manual states 110 ft/lbs just like the 2012.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

I've got 1600 miles on my Overland with ORAII. Checked my lug nuts yesterday. A couple on each wheel were below 90 ft/lbs and the others were around 90/95 ft/lbs. I set them all for 95 ft/lbs.

I just read in the manual that the spare with the steel wheel is suppose to be torqued to 110 ft/lb. Don't know if the aluminum wheels are the same. Thing I'll re-torque to 100 ft/lbs.

Nothing worse than loose nuts.....haha
I once flipped my truck on the freeway because the nuts were loose on one wheel.
Luckily no one was hurt.
Its a good idea to torque your nuts.

Good to know!! As I always do my winter tire switch myself in the garage. I feel like the shop guys always screw-up my wheels when they do it.

Re: Check your lug nuts!

A mod should go through the earlier posts in this thread and edit them so people don't just read the first page and torque to 95 instead of 110.

(Probably not a huge deal, but err on the side of caution!)

When I was 17 or 18, my stepdad and I had been rebuilding various parts of my first car (72 super beetle).
He had just done something which required the wheels off, then took it for a test drive. A couple miles from home, the left front came flying off. Fortunately it was at a somewhat low speed, and the tire/wheel didn't hit anything or anybody.

He furiously blamed me when he got home, but I knew I had not touched the wheels that day. He later figured out it was his own mistake. He had a habit of hand tightening all the lug nuts on multiple wheels before going back around to torque them. He had somehow forgotten to come back to the whole left side.
