Re: Classic Oil Change Mess Up

I do have a cat: -2 on the mancard scale

At 25 lbs, he's bigger than most dogs: +1 on the mancard scale

His front paws have an extra digit, six total, just to prop his fat head up: +2 on the mancard scale

He's the largest animal that is allowed to poop indoors: that's a wash

Net Mancard Score for living with a Mountain Lion: +1

Too funny Moose!

Ha I have had the gasket stick a few times on my old ZJ, but I always would notice when I wipe any oil drips off the mount before putting on the new filter.

2 cats, 1 golden retriever and a wife (all female). Doing my own car work is about all that keeps the man card in my pocket

Re: Classic Oil Change Mess Up

Well. did my first oil change this weekend. I have a 5.7 Hemi Overland with Off Road Adventure 2 package. Just got back from long road trip upstate for hunting season, so the man card was fully up to date. Highway mileage was excellent, and the EVIC computer had my overall fuel mileage average since 600 miles (last reset) to 1578 miles was 19.5 MPG. Not too shabby for this big beastie.

I wanted to do the first change before winter sets in, as it has been very warm here in the NY metro area. Mileage 1578 since picking it up at the end of July, so six months almost here. Got a K&N HP-2010 and seven quarts of Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic and was all set. Access is easy. Just raised her up to off road 2 and leaned under the right side bumper and access was very good. Drained the pan, no problem. Just make sure you have a BIG drain pan as mine nearly overflowed with 7 quarts in it. I've since got a bigger better one.

Then I tried to get off the factory filter which needed a strap wrench. Mine has a cam on it and you put your socket extension in and wrench it off. Well, the SHTF as we say. The area cries out for a nut on the filter end, like the K&N filter (which it gets exclusively from now on!) Anyway, the factory filter was on so tight I could not get leverage to move it in my prone position. So, I get me a pipe to stick on the end of the breaker bar that I was using. Fumbling for the right angle, the pipe slips and clocks me in the forehead. Blood flows! Stop everything. Clean wound, apply bandage. back to work.

Finally, I see a slight movement. I press on. Ever so slightly it budged. A bit more...Well it took nearly three full turns before I could hand loosen it. Man, those dealers don't want you doing oil changes! Naturally, the gasket stuck. What did they expect when they put a filter on with a jack hammer! The K&N filter went on like silk and the 1 inch nut on the end is just the ticket in this spot for good access and leverage. A few cranks of the ratchet and she was nice and snug. Poured my seven quarts in and the dipstick read full. Start up and test drive, leak free. Well, I can say, having split blood on the subject, avoid scalloped oil filters and get a K&N HP-2010 filter. The next change will be a bloodless snap!
