Colorado WK2 Jeep People - Trails

Aiyer / WeBeCinYa / Chiabanh / any other CO people

Where would be a good place to see some of the Aspen groves changing colors in the coming weeks?

Would prefer a place that a car couldn't get to, as to avoid some of the crowds and get to "use" the Jeep.

This thread could also be used for CO people looking for trails to hit in their WK2's

TIA

Re: Colorado WK2 Jeep People - Trails

I have heard Boreas Pass is a good place. I usually follow the discussion thread on 14ers.com forum. There is a thread right now with pictures and such. Maroon Bells area is very famous for fall color watching. I plan to go there in next couple of weeks.

http://14ers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=37217

We usually do the peak-to-peak drive and there is plenty of colors to see on that stretch. On my drive from Ouray back home this past weekend, we saw some patches of colors. Ouray will be peak colors in two weeks I think.

Cheers,
-A

Schofield Pass, near Crested Butte is supposed to be scenic and fun Jeep 4x4 drive. I might hit Maroon Bells this weekend.

Re: Colorado WK2 Jeep People - Trails

Thanks for the replies so far. I should have clarified that I was looking for something a bit closer to Denver so that we could drive up, see some colors and off road a little, then drive back to the city.

I definitely want to get out to Telluride and Aspen, etc., eventually.

Re: Colorado WK2 Jeep People - Trails

Kenosha pass is pretty cool this time of year with the leaves changing color.. but it'll be crowded as it's not an off-road trail or anything. Try Argentine Pass outside Georgetown as well... you won't see any cars on there and sections of it are nice before going over the timberline. There's plenty of other trails as well within an hour or two of Denver.

Chibianh - I watched your YouTube videos and noticed you did the Bill Moore Lake trail.

How difficult is that trail? Did you do it alone? Any Aspen groves in view from that Trail?

Seems not too difficult as per traildamage website.

Yea that's what I was thinking too, but then googling "Bill Moore Lake 4x4" - this is the first link that comes up:

http://www.everytrail.com/guide/bill...lake-4x4-trail

Excerpt: Rating:

Difficult. Upper part has several steep, loose, rocky sections. Some stock SUVs can do it, but 4x4 driving experience is needed. Use F.S. 183.1A bypass around worst section if your vehicle does not have differential lockers.

Couple comments:

1. Sorry for bumping my own thread so much as I know some of you guys are probably sick of seeing me post questions. I also post on another Jeep site and I'm not getting many responses there, either.

2. What would you all say a stock WK2 can handle as far as the TrailDamage ratings? Is a 5 too much to handle?

Thanks

Bill Moore is not difficult. There are a couple of off camber sections. Nothing major.

Re: Colorado WK2 Jeep People - Trails

Bill Moore was fun.. not too difficult. A few steep rocky areas, but nothing a stock WK2 can't handle. I've only done a couple of trails with 5 in the ratings and didn't have problems.. a few scrapes, but never got stuck. So I would think a stock WK2 would do 5s just fine as well.

As for Bill Moore being good for fall colors, I would assume so.. the leaves were still green when I ran it. Here's a couple of pics from taken from my WK2.. you can imagine what it'll look like with orange and red leaves.

Re: Colorado WK2 Jeep People - Trails

It looks to me like the major limiting factor to WK2s and trails is how much damage you are willing to do to your new truck. The platform will do the Rubicon, it was just dented to hell when they got finished. My experience so far is that it will go more places than I'm willing to drive it.
